On Friday Night I saw Sigur Ros at Louisville Palace. It was the perfect venue. This is probably the most beautiful place to see a show I've ever seen. Take a look.

http://www.louisvillepalace.com/tours/stage.htm

Sigur Ros, as well, was unbelievable.

They opened up with "Glosoli" behind this screen. At the crescendo, the screen came up and they started rocking the shit out of everybody.

They're such an amazing band to watch. Jón Þór Birgisson plays his guitar with a bow. The bassist was playing his bass with a drumstick. The opening act played behind them as a string quartet.

I can't remember the exact setlist, but they largely selected from "( )" and "Takk...". I know they played Hoppipolla/Meo Blodnasir, Saeglopur, Gong, Svo Hljott, Heysatan, Vaka and Samskeyti, plus a few others. They closed their first set with a song I've never heard before. Naturally, it's Sigur Ros so I couldn't identify any of the lyrics, but it was an incredible song and I've been driving myself nuts trying to find a setlist so I can find out what it's called. It's not on any of their albums, so I suspect it's a new song. If that's what's to come on their next album it's probably going to be the best album of all time.

The highlight, though, was probably closing with "Popplagio" at the very end. It's the perfect song to close with. The screen came back down, and for the final few minutes we saw silhouettes of them rocking out harder than just about anyone I've ever seen.

It's common for me to say this after I've seen a show, but it was the best concert I've ever seen.

Wow! That place is unlike anything I've ever seen before and you got to see Sigur Ros there. I don't doubt it was the best concert ever. Damn.

Last night, I went to the State College leg of the Screaming is for Babies tour, for little reason beyond getting the chance to see Gatsbys American Dream.

Their entire set was incredibly tight, and they even played a new song.

The best part, though, was that after the show, I managed to talk to Nic for a a long time, got to meet all of the band at different points, got to hang out in their van for a minute or two, got all of their autographs, and everything. I think I can say that they are the coolest, nicest, most awesome, down-to-earth guys I've ever met.

Went to Bleeding Through in St. Paul last night.

Opening for them were Haste the Day, Between the Buried and Me, and As I Lay Dying. All of which I had never listened to before that day.

I don't listen to metal unless I happen to be with a friend who likes metal. Bleeding Through is the only metal band I can honestly enjoy. All the other ones just kinda piss me off because their names are so damn similar. As I Lay Dying, It Dies Today, Every Time I Die, etc, etc... I mean come now, is the concept of death the only thing cool enough to name a band after?

Anyway, the show was pretty good. I can enjoy metal with metalheads to some degree. Bleeding Through was pretty damn good but that was expected.

I went to see Taking Back Sunday on the 11th and then Alkaline Trio on the 13th.

TBS played a really good show and it seemed like they really enjoyed playing. My night was pretty much topped off seeing Adam Lazzara singing the encore whilst swinging upside down from the rafters, awesome.

Alkaline Trio were the exact opposite, they just seemed to rush through their set and played no encore. Despite an energetic crowd, as soon as they were finished, they just rushed out the back into the waiting van.

I almost never get to see live music, 'cause the city I live in isn't real conducive to "going to shows" unless I want to see short 20 year olds playing at a VFW hall. That being said, I got to see Sarah Harmer in a tiny cramped venue over the weekend, and it was absolutely amazing. I think she's kind of got a reputation as "music to buy for your parents," but if you have even a slight appreciation for the singer/songwriter, girl-with-a-guitar style of music, you should make a point to check her out.

Dear Emily,

You are forgetting about the super fun Life house concerts thrown by Ohio University!

Love,
Sami

For Breakfast Serious though, Cake played last year and that was pretty awesome.

I just got back from seeing Wilco in Nashville and hot damn, Wilco is a fucking good band. Logan said something about them seeming kind of bad or boring live on that I Am Trying to Break Your Heart documentary, and that's true. But that's almost a completely different band. It's still the core three guys (Jeff Tweedy, Glen Kotch, John Bass Player) but they've also added a new keyboard player, another guy who plays keyboard and guitar, and Nels Cline. Nels Cline is the coolest guitar player I have ever seen in my life ever and holy shit he was so awesome omg. Jeff Tweedy's actually really good at the guitar too! There were about three new songs played and I'm really excited about this new album, because all three songs were great. Especially Walken. It's not like, a big step forward or anything, but it's a really fun, groovin' rock song.

Highlights!

- Jeff Tweedy's guitar solo on Hell is Chrome.
- At Least That's What You Said and Sunken Treasure puttin' tears in this old bear's eyes!
- Spiders was so fucking perfect. I love that it's such an unruly sounding song and there's just weird, crazy stuff going on all over the place, but the changes were all done perfectly and were really rockin'.
- During the little call and response breakdown of Kingpin, Jeff stopped to explain to us what to do and exactly why we were doing it. When he would say, "How can I?" we were to respond by screaming. He explained that we were screaming to cleanse our bodies of bile or something or other. It was a ridiculous reason but I sure did have a good time hollerin'.
- For the last encore (of three), Jeff Tweedy came to the front of the stage and sang Acuff Rose (an Uncle Tupelo song) acoustic and without the mic, so of course everyone was as quiet as possible and it was perfect and I love The Tweed.

It's tough for me to say that this show was better than the Devendra Banhart show I saw a few months back, but I think it was. The Devendra show was incredibly intimate, but god damn. Fuckin' Wilco. So as of right now my top three shows ever are:

1. Wilco, Ryman Auditorium in Nashvile, 3-17-06
2. Devendra Banhart, Exit-In in Nashville, October of 2005.
3. Ryan Adams, Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, November of 2004.

Here's a setlist I nabbed from viachicago.org that looks about right:

Sunken Treasure
Mountain Bed
Airline To Heaven
At My Window Sad and Lonely
Forget The Flowers
When the Roses Bloom Again
California Stars
Muzzle of Bees
Hell is Chrome
Spiders
Jesus Etc
Walken
Handshake Drugs
I am Trying to Break Your Heart
Shot in the Arm
At Least That's What You Said
Late Greats

Encore 1
Hummingbird
Either Way (new song)
Theologians
I'm the Man Who Loves You
Kingpin

Encore 2
Passenger Side
War on War

Encore 3
Acuff Rose - Jeff acoustic unplugged

They didn't do an encore when I saw them. Also they didn't play "Airline to Heaven" or "California Stars," and I cried about that a little later in private.

Saves the Day, and to a slightly lesser degree Circa Survive, at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park.

Amazing.

Aside from 3 douchebags, the crowd was really really good. STD played a whole lot of songs I wasn't expecting. Amazing.

The Darkness

I was kind of dreading going and only went because my girlfriend bought me a ticket, but they played probably the 2nd best show I have ever been to.

Its just interesting how much better you come away from a show after seeing a band who looks and acts like they want to be there.

Funeral For A Friend

Despite the fact that it was 3 and a half hours between the doors opening and the main band playing, they were insane.

The best part was when the last song was played, the lead singer finished it off by jumping into the pit still singing.

Did they finish their set and come back for the encore as four different bands?

They had 3 support bands and rather large spaces in between them.

It was also great when the local support act Eleventh He Reaches London was replaced at the last minute by another band named Stars Dont Fall, and twice Funeral For a Friend yelled out "LETS GIVE IT UP FOR ELEVENTH HE REACHES LONDON!!!"
