Post subject: Last Show You Went To |
|
|
I just got back from a free show at the New York State fair. The show was Ted Nugent. Now, going into a Ted Nugent show, you think you know what to expect. Let me tell you something, you're half right. He's actually crazier than you might think. Some highlights:
- My friend who, minutes before the show started said, "I wonder what life's going to be like, Post-Nuge?"
- My other friend posing the question, "Who is crazier, The Nuge or Gary Busey?" (I have no answer)
- That same friend who, when seeing some skaaanky girls trying to get back stage, coined the term "Nuge Spooge"
- Ted Nugent calls all concert-goers his "huntin' buddies."
- Ted Nugent calls upstate New York "The real new York" (because it's a lot more redneck than you probably think)
- A song where Ted Nugent told the following people to kiss his ass: Osama, The tally-ban (taliban), Al Qaeda, The UN, Chuck Schumer, Hillary Clinton and Jesse Jackson.
- Numerous references to the NRA
- On stage, he had a 50-cal, a few AK's, an uzi and cattle skulls
- Cat Scratch Fever
edit: - A line from one of his songs went something like this, "I believe in animal's rights, if you mean my dog gets to hump my shin / And I believe in freedom of choice, except when it's your next of kin"
- Ted Nugent called people who think animals have rights "mental retards."
- Ted Nugent told the following people to leave: People who think animals have a soul, people who think war is not the answer and people who do methamphetamines
- Ted Nugent said we all need to keep an eye out in our neighborhoods for terrorists who kill Americans. He expounded by saying that he meant drunk drivers. This isn't a joke, and it actually kinda made sense. Drunk drivers are kinda like suicide bombers, and he said, "Why should we let them kill Americans."
- The best part of the night was when he said, "It's American spirit to go to war. We need to keep fighting. Fight the terrorists. Fight the japs." I was like, "Dude, the japs? That was like 70 years ago."
edit 2: - Ted Nugent made fun of a guy for having a fat wife.
- Ted Nugent stopped the show to make some girl promise that she wouldn't drink or take drugs. _________________ I GOT IRATE AND FETCHED MY MAGIC MARKER AND WROTE "WORLDS INCORRECT GRANDMOM" ON ALL HER SUNDAY DRESSES

i daresay i have seen of montreal way too many times this summer, if that's possible. such is the way of athens living. i definitely got bored with them at athens popfest, but it might have been because they were less gimmicky.
speaking OF of montreal, i saw one of their affiliate's bands the other night, called "casper and the cookies." another local. lead singer is really short and wears platform sneakers to make him a towearing 5'8" or so. adorns himself with a king's cape. they're very catchy and cutesy and all around delightful.

Last show I went to was the White Stripes at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley. Jack actually stopped the show when someone hit a ballon from a local radio station on stage. At the end, a guy ran on stage, jumped on him, and ran back into the crowd. Jack's response can be seen as the first link on collegehumor.com. I thought that was pretty cool. _________________

Co-headlining Limbeck and Koufax show.
The openers were Minutes Too Far (decent; young guys having fun, not much more), Fingers Cut Megamachine (agonizingly slow folk-rock with such bad performance skills that people were laughing; the band kept asking for beer and painkillers...), and Biirdie.
I've already raved about Biirdie, and Limbeck is one of my favorite fun bands. Koufax was pretty good. They had an awesome cover of "Steppin' Out."
This all was at the Knitting Factory main stage in Hollywood. _________________ Like hot naked chicks? Click here. |

I went to see Elvis Costello and the Imposters with Emmylou Harris a few weeks ago. Pretty good set, some nice jams, and lots of decent country stuff. Also, he had a kick ass guitar player with him who looked just like Dennis Eckersly. _________________

sadly, my last one was Nelly, but hey, I was getting paid to work it so it wasn't all bad.
Got tickets to see Audioslave, Nickelback and a bunch of others mid-October at Buzzfest in Houston. _________________

It isn't really my 'type' of music either. I just really enjoy Nelly for some odd reason. _________________ the fuck stops here. |

My last show was about a year ago, sadly. it was kind of weird. I went to see saves the day in my hometown (in a teeny tiny venue that acts as a teen center by day) but in the middle of their set, there was a gas leak. Thankfully they hadn't played "freakish" yet, so no had taken out their lighters. As a consolation for the end of the concert, Chris the lead singer went to the most well lit hill and played a short set with his acoustic guitar. Afterwards he stuck around and signed stuff and took pictures. For a while he was even my outgoing message because I (along with like 8 other people) had him record it on my cell phone (though I tragically lost the outgoing message when my phone died). Then I ran to my car and had him sign my copy of "through being cool". I figured that it would be kind of retarded if I had him sign every cd of mine, so I just had him sign that one. I also got a hug.
That was probably one of the more badass moments of my life. _________________ BANKER: HAY MY TURN TO TALK NOW |

| I saw Coldplay outside of Indianapolis a couple of weeks ago. I'm not a huge fan of the amphitheater they have there, but the band itself was very good. While I wouldn't say it was my favorite concert I've ever been to, they were possibly the most technically impressive band I've seen live. |

The last "show" I went to was Sziget festival in Budapest, which lasted for a week and is pretty much the biggest open-air endeavour in Europe today. A list of the 1000+ attending bands and such can be found here:
http://www.sziget.hu/festival_english/programs
Random notes:
- The Hives have the most annoying singer I've ever seen ... And I'm a guy who normally enjoys insane ramblings between songs.
- Hare Krishna may look peaceful during the day, but as soon as the sun comes down they break out their metal faces and rock the fuck out, playing the same riff for 45 minutes at a time. The neat thing was that they were located directly opposite from a yiddish booth called Ask Moses, where you could get advice from a youngish, baseball-capped rabbi for a whopping 5 Forinth.
- Since my hammock was near the World Music stage I saw more weird eastern-influenced folk music than you can shake a bottle of Absinth at.* It all meshes together a bit in my head into a swirling blur of violins, acoustic guitars and beautiful, bare-footed Hungarian girls derwisching around like there was no tomorrow. God, I love this festival.
The only new bands I saw there that really stuck in my head were Les Hurlements D'Leo (because a buddy who's currently in Paris told me not to miss them or he'd hit me in the eye with Bruce Lee's grave) and Oi Va Voi (hooray for jewish Trip-Hop).
- There is nothing, nothing funnier than two drunken Scotsmen in sumo suits beating the crap out of eachother with wrestling moves that would even make the latest diva search bimbo go "Gee guys, that looks a little fake".
- Juliette Lewis has a kickass band and plays a righteous Iggy Pop cover.
- Aaaaah Langos, my only weakness.
- My absolute moment of Zen came one morning at about 7 a.m. I was standing on the dew-covered grass, banging frenetic sounds of percussion out of a trash can. Beside me stood a guy with a singing saw, a midget with a broken guitar, a guy bearing some weird flute thing and an extremely sleep-deprived girl belting out Hole and other assorted covers that, for the first time in my life, didn't make me want to claw out Courtney Love's eyes. Around us danced an amazing display of jugglers and other merry folk. If I ever end up in a time loop, this is the morning I want to spend forever and ever.
- Here's some neat zoomable Quicktime panorama thingy from Yann Tiersen's (the guy who did the Amelie soundtrack) gig at the Theater stage.
- The main station in Budapest sells, besides their many orgasmically tasty pastries, egg sandwiches that will make you check your stomach for sentient worms weeks afterwards.
*Speaking of Absinth: If it's blue and looks like mouthwash, it's probably going to taste that way too. _________________

I saw MSI on saturday. The whole band signed my sketchbook and I got my eye licked, my nose honked, and a kiss on the lips from the lead singer, Jimmy Urine. _________________ My pumpkin is more scene than your pumpkin. |

I went to the Bruisers reunion show a few weeks back. For those not in the know, the Brusers was Dropkick Murphys singer Al Barr's old band, and they've been broken up since around 1998 or so. I of course didn't know this until we were on our way to Boston, but then I was sort of suckered into going in the first place.
Anyway, the show wasn't as horrible as I had anticipated. I got to laugh at a bunch of thirty year olds who probably don't make much money on account of their hair is still dyed and spiked, and beer wasn't as expensive as I thought it would be. Three hours of oi music was enough to drive me insane, however, so I spent most of the Bruiser's set at the Cask & Flagon right outside Fenway watching the Sox game.
My ticket was paid for and I didn't have to chip in for gas, so overall I can't complain much. It was more fun than sitting at home I guess. And I did find out about the annual Big D and the Kids Table Halloween show, so the night wasn't a total wash. _________________ [quote="Bismark"]Didn't you know?
