Last night I saw Calexico, Iron & Wine, and Salvador Duran at Headliners here in Louisville.

In the center, you can see Sam Beam, aka Iron & Wine, with his back to the audience like he always does when he's not actually singing. It's a shame I couldn't get a picture of his goofy-ass beard. Surrounding him are Calexico, Beam's sister to the left, and in the center with his thumbs in his pockets, Salvador Duran.

Calexico opened the show. Coming into the show I "liked" them, now I officially "love" them. One of the most incredible live performances I have ever seen in my life.

Bridging the gap between them and Iron & Wine was Mr. Salvador Duran, who is among the most badassed individuals I've ever seen. He played harmonica, he played guitar, he practically sang sopranos, and he broke down a beat by tapping his feet and clicking with his mouth.

Then Iron & Wine took the stage. I wouldn't call myself a huge fan, but I respect him well enough. It was the first time I've ever been to a concert and heard people going like "SHHHHH" to people who were being too loud. That made me laugh pretty hard. The music was good, but I couldn't help but get a little bored. It's just not the volume of music that I like seeing live, unless maybe I get to sit down.

The last hour or so, Iron & Wine was joined onstage by Calexico and Salvadore Duran. This was worth the price of admission all by itself. At one point all twelve members from all three acts were onstage playing together, and it was simply amazing.

Overall, I'd give:
Calexico: 9 of 10
Salvator Duran: 8 of 10
Iron & Wine: 6 of 10 (again, talented guy, good music, not so special live by himself)
All three on stage together: 10 of 10

I went to see Less Than Jake last night. They were pretty awesome, as one would expect. The best part was that they knew we didn't want to hear any new songs, so they just played old ones. A lot of Losing Streak, actually, which I wasn't really expecting to hear much of.

To conclude, I give Less Than Jake my full endorsement and would suggest seeing them if ever afforded the oppertunity.

I saw LTJ once maybe six years ago. They had a lot of energy, but personally I'd prefer a Big D & The Kids Table show.

Also I saw Goldfinger and Reel Big Fish about three months later, and it was maybe one of the worst shows I've ever seen, surprisingly.

I've...never been to an actual concert. But last weekend, I went with my family to a restaurant called Lulu's, with live bands (presumably all local laid-back-bluesy performances that no one would object to), and the band was called Blind Dog Mike and the Howlers. Yeah, they were good. I think they only sang covers though.

About 2 weeks ago I saw RBF/Goldfinger/Zebrahead. Zebrahead opened and went on for about 30 minutes. Their new singer is really "eh" and I haven't liked the band since their Waste of Mind CD, which they only played about 2 songs from. The rest of the time the songs seemed really shitty compared to the ones off that CD. I got to meet Ben after they went on though because my friend, for some reason, is a hardcore Zebrahead fan so they all know him.

Goldfinger was surprisingly a lot better than Zebrahead and actually kinda entertaining. They called up anyone who had never seen them on stage an there were about 100 people bouncing around to their happy-dance song they played. Then later some guy, who I don't think was in the band but associated with them, called one of the guys back onto stage and had him eat a Snickers out of his ass? I dunno. But their music actually was tolerable despite me and my friend's girlfriend mockingly rocking out to it. What we enjoyed most though was watching my friend who was singing along to all their lyrics along with all the rest of the pre-teens.

Reel Big Fish, who's probably my third favorite band right about now, was fucking awesome BUT they played for way too long. I really enjoyed the show because it was the first time I've seen them, but they played for almost 2.5 hours. When it was time for their encore, I think the rest of the crowd was feeling the same way I was- sorta jaded from their sound. It was the weakest call back to stage I've ever heard. It sounds like I had an awful time, but I really liked seeing them. If they would've cut it a little, or actually a lot, shorter, like maybe even an hour and left me wanting more I would've been a lot more satisfied.

I went to see George Clinton and the Parliment Funkadelic on Saturday.

It was a sweet show, but every six-foot and up man in the state situated themselves directly in front of me at one point or another. And at least one of them was drenched in his own sweat, which he shared with everyone by way of constant moronic-looking dancing.

The first thing out of George's mouth when he took the stage was :From the Window, to the wall! Till the sweat drop down my balls!" etd. It was funny as hell.

In short, the crowd sucked, but the show was great.

Wow. They did the exact same tour five years ago. I think I went to the Boston, Providence and Hartford shows. This was before Goldfinger went into their "heil PETA" phase and started playing shitty music, too.

I've seen Reel Big Fish so many times. The joke used to be that I'd seen them so many times I'd just wake up and they'd be playing in my bedroom, and I'd have to try and coerse them into knocking it off so I could get back to sleep. I think I'm in the double-digits so far as Reel Big Fish shows go.

Last Friday, I went to see Sullivan and a couple of local bands at this place in Danville, Virginia called Plan B, but the last major show I went to was in May. That show was in Winston-Salem, Noth Carolina, and I saw Bright Eyes and The Faint. It was pretty exciting.

I'm pretty sure my RBF/Goldfinger experience sucked for the following reasons:

1) It was when the Rx Bandits abandoned their successful "shitty ska that's catchy as hell" for "shitty ska wherein we pretend to be Sublime but fail so hideously that you're better off with a scratched copy of '40 oz. to Freedom'" right after they released "Progress." (irony Thomas Haden Church)

2) Zebrahead

3) It was in my what-I-guess-you-can-call-a-phase of not thinking of Goldfinger as a worthwhile band, of which I have yet to "grow out of." I never really considered them much of an act anyway, although, like everyone I've known who has ever heard Goldfinger, I greatly enjoyed the last six tracks of the self-titled album. I immediately dismissed "Hang Ups," then listened to it more carefully, and eventually dismissed it. I guess it was a few months to a year after I attended this show that "Open Your Eyes," one of The Five Worst Pop Songs In The Modern Era, and I dismissed them altogether.

So I guess what I'm saying is I didn't really like Goldfinger. The best song they did was "Superman," which is a little sad in ways I'm not quite comfortable with.

4) Reel Big Fish did not arrive in strength. They were using a backup drummer and lacked a rhythm guitar. I think they might have also been missing one of thier trombonists, but these might just be the result of some personnel changes since I had previously followed the band, years before. They played mostly tunes from "Why Do They Rock So Hard," and the best crowd response came, unfortunately, from their cover of "Take on Me." They also failed to play "Kiss Me Deadly," my favorite song of theirs, and phoned in the shit out of their "Unity" cover, which I was never particularly wild about. "You Want This (The Set Up)" was their musical apex, but there wasn't anything particularly brilliant about it.

5) It was the last show of the tour, and everyone was tired and half-assed as hell. I had always hoped that seeing RBF would be both a hilarious and musically magical enterprise, and the funniest thing they did or said was "this is a song about sex." Goldfinger encored "Mabel," which was probably my favorite song of theirs when I had a favorite song, and Zebrahead and Rx Bandits were shit to begin with.

Also three of the four bands covered Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take it." Fuck that nonsense.

Even though I've liked them since Turn the Radio Off, this was the first time I've seen RBF because I could never find anyone to go with me. I'd see them again as long as it was sans Zebrahead and they didn't play for two and half hours.

Yeah I went to that same tour. That was when I started liking Zebrahead a lot because they put on a great show when I saw them. Then my friend's sister got hit in the head with a bottle during Goldfinger and my night went to shit.

What's with everyone hating Zebrahead?

Also, totally agree with Justin about LTJ. They are my favorite band to see in concert, which I have done a dozen times.

I went to see The Blue Line about a month ago. It was awesome.

I don't hate them, just that I haven't liked them since Waste of Mind. Their new singer doesn't sound the same either.

I officially got my tickets to Saves The Day in April.

Holy god, I'm so pumped.

They're playing with Circa Survive, who I also like a whole bunch.

The place they're playing at is super small too, so that should add to the whole experience.

Oh man, oh man.

Tonight marks the first of three rad shows I'm going to in the coming months. Drag the River tonight, Minus the Bear & Appleseed Cast w/ Rocky Votolato in a couple weeks, and Alkaline Trio w/ Against Me a couple weeks after that.

This is me shouting: Hybrid Moments/Montana/I Was A Prayer

I got paid to attend a Nickelback concert and take a winner backstage for a meet and greet. Before we were taken back, we were told that they would only sign one item, and no cameras were allowed. So with that in mind, I went up to Chad Kroeger and said, "Do you guys, being Nickelback, see the irony in the fact that you don't take photographs?"

They didn't get it.
