I'm walking through a shopping centre and notice the music playing in the background: Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing".

Centre management obviously wanted all their patrons to "get down tonight".

Anyone else heard any strange choices of background music in shopping centres, malls, restaurants or elevators?

I didn't actually hear this, but I do know it exists:

When I worked at a Holiday Inn Express for awhile, the Muzak company would send us catalogs. They had them split into categories.

The three categories I remember:
- Favorites from the 60s and 70s
- Beatles (I actually heard Beatles Muzak at Wendy's one time)
- Metallica.

I swear I am not making this up. I tried to talk my boss into letting Muzak install their crap in our lobby, just so we could order the Metallica one, but unfortunately she didn't go for it.

In case anyone didn't know, Muzak was originally (and still mostly is) designed for emotional and psychological changes in customers. In the night and morning they play wilder music to pep and wake you up so you won't leave. In the middle of the day, they play calm music to calm you down, so you won't just run away or something, I don't know.

The whole point of that is, if you want to hear weird music, it'd be a good idea to go late at night.

Which is why I thought it was an odd choice to play Sexual Healing in a shopping centre. I suddenly imagined everyone in Aisle 4 seductively taking off their clothes and sliding their hands smoothly down their bodies in harmony to Gaye's soulful voice...

And when I get that feeling
I want Sexual Healing...

I can't think of any myself, but somebody once posted that he was at the supermarket and they were playing Green Day's Dookie secret track, "All By Myself".

In a mall food court, they played Just Like Heaven in between a bunch of muzak. It was a bit odd.

I KNOW I've heard the vocal melody for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" with that damn muzzak trumpet.

When I worked at RadioShack, the music had a reputation for being awful. The worst probably being a Rufus Wainwright cover of "Across the Universe".

Sounds to me like it's time to hear which songs are the favorites of the good folks over at the Jumping & Standing Forum.

I work at Barnes & Noble, and on one of our stations, there's a muzak version of "Poses" by Rufus Wainwright that plays. Not that it's a song that doesn't translate well to muzak, 'cause it kinda works, but Rufus Wainwright is such an obscure choice, I think.

More Rufus! I wonder what on earth the muzak people's obsession with him is.

It seems like a lot of places, especially national chain stores, are eschewing muzak in favor of just playing the real thing.
