So, every now and then, a record label will take a band that was once very hot, but is now aged and waning in popularity, and select what they think were the band's best tracks (or, once in awhile, they actually allow the band to compile this list), and then sell it to you all over again for at least one portrait of Andrew Jackson.

Which of said greatest hits compilations do you think really hit the mark?

I'm a big fan of The Who, a band that has quite a few greatest hits releases to their credit. In 2004 they released "The Who- Then and Now", a 20-track collection. I have to go with this one as my favorite, as there is only one track I did not enjoy (Old Red Wine, which was actually a new recording made in 04). The other 19 songs are all ones I enjoy. I think there are a few more that should have made it, such as Bargain and Baba O'Reilly, but I don't mind a greatest hits album missing good songs unless it's populated with some not-so-good songs.

So, based on the errors of omission vs. overall quality, I'd give it a 8.5 out of 10.

The Sounds of Science; a 2-disc, 42 track retrospective of the first 15 years of the Beastie Boys' discography. Aside of the usual hit singles, they packed in so many B-sides, studio outtakes and rarities. Far more than would make any fan happy, at any rate.

I see that as more of an "anthology" than a "greatest hits collection" because of all the stuff you normally wouldn't have heard if you're like me & go "do you remember sabotage the song"

Forty Licks is probably the greatest, but my personal favorite is probably the Beach Boys' "Sounds of Summer."

These two are a cut about the rest:

----------

1) Elton John - Greatest Hits 1970 - 2002

2) Stone Temple Pilots - Thank You

----------

Just great all the way around. Especially the Elton one. Fantastic.

Add SundownMotel's Billy Joel to your list, and you've got my picks all there, Dollo.

Heh, both of these got played at work today. The customers kept giving me general "right on's". I felt popular, even though I didn't do it.

Stavesacre - Collective

Although Brandon Ebel is a money-clutching whore in general (and a son of a bitch specifically) and puts out a greatest hits album any time a band leaves one of his labels or breaks up because he doesn't know how to treat bands in the first place, this is a phenomenal album. It gives you the essential tracks from the first two albums, gives you all the B-sides and tracks from splits, and then gives you alternate takes of the best songs off of Speakeasy, which are every bit as good as the originals. Basically you could just own Speakeasy and Collective and not be wanting for anything else, although their eponymous full-length and recent EP are really quite stunning.

Does Lionel Richie have a greatest hits CD? Because I don't own it but I'm sure I should.
