"The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" and "Crash" indicate a disturbing trend toward giving Best Picture to the movie with the most deus ex machinae.

At least Brokeback didn't win. I couldn't possibly handle all the renewed hype it would have generated.

It was. I'm just sick to death of Brokeback jokes. The only good one was Brokeback To The Future, give it up already.

I can't believe they gave Best Picture to "Do You Realize Racism." I guess the other 20 after-school specials I saw only needed to say "fuck" a bunch to be considered wonderous works of art.

Exactly. They trot out cookie cutter characters and put them in after school special "Good decision, bad decision" situations. And Best Picture Oscars ensue?

Also, was anyone else incredibly pissed off about how the "changes our perceptions" montage cut scenes from Movies like To Kill A Mockingbird, Network and In the Heat of the Night with crap like Thelma and Louise and Million Dollar Baby?

Yeah. 3 6 Mafia was great. I don't know what was better: the melodrama of the song, about a pimp, and the oversoul at the end, or their acceptance speech. I think they could have thanked people for like half an hour and they wouldn't be played off the stage. Their fucking big tough guys!

And yeah, best actress and sound editing commercials were awesome. I like the "Paid for by (which one's?) Mom."

The bartender at the bar I was at a few nights ago was in a "Phillip Seymour Hoffman Lookalike Contest" but did not win.

Hint: PSHoffman is from Pittsford, NY, I believe, which is where the bar is.

I was told Day After Tomorrow was in there, but I missed it. If true, that would be a hell of a lot worse.

They got chased down a hallway by cold. That's pretty groundbreaking if you ask me.

If you actually expected Howl's Moving Castle to win the Academy Award, you're a sucker.

I'm not really all that upset about anything. I don't think Crash should've won, but I thought the best film of last year was Cinderella Man, so what the shit do I know?

I wasn't really surprised at any of the winners, either. At all. When you watch enough of these things, you start to understand how the Academy works, what turns them on & stuff. That's why all the film critics pick who SHOULD win & who WILL win in their columns.

I was satisfied with their pick for best director, but if they picked somebody else I don't think I'd be too ang lee.

In other jokes,

Reese Witherspoon pissed me off the most. She was barely in that movie. They should have switched her and Rachel Wisez around.

Yes, I barely saw Reese Withspoon in Walk The Line. All those times I saw June Carter and Johnny Cash singing songs, I only saw Cash because Reese Witherspoon was wearing the green-screen costume that Ben Stiller wore. Twit.

My opinion? All-in-all, I enjoyed the ceremony. Stewart was funny, no complaints there. The speeches weren't stupid, which was a plus. Altman got awarded, which = hooray!

But the montages sucked. I see those same montages every five years. They trot them out every five years and play them over and over. The only montage worth watching is the In Memorium.

Also, I hated the pres' comments about blah-blah-blah-cinema-is-so-much-better-than-DVD-or-TV. No, you idiot, innovation is better than banality, despite the medium. I respect anyone who can make a good movie or TV show, just as long as they engage me.

About the Crash upset: I liked the surprise. I watched the Oscars at my old University's theatre (on the big screen!) and I was talking to a guy prior. He said that these days the Oscars are too predictable. I guess he's eating his humble pie now.

But I can't form an opinion on which is better (Brokeback or Crash) since I haven't seen Crash. Actually, I've been so busy this year I didn't get a chance to see most of the movies prior to the Oscars. I was rooting for Brokeback (pun not intended) and was very happy to see guys like McMurtry and Ang Lee win Oscars.

I'm not particularly upset with any of the wins, even though I have been with past wins (a la Titanic for Best Pic in 1997). But this year the Crash upset doesn't bug me. And to be honest, I think whatever pic won Best Picture, people would be complaining about it. For example...

Crash - "I can't believe they voted a such simplistic 'OMG racism' film."
Brokeback - "Oh great! MORE gay cowboy jokes."
Good Night, and Good Luck - "WTF? They voted a boring, black-and-white movie? And Clooney is a biased pinko commie liberal, which is the REAL reason why Hollywood voted for the film. P.S. McCarthy sux!"
Capote - "No way was this the best film. Best Actor maybe, but not best film."
Munich - "Bah, Hollywood loves another Spielberg-gets-moral film. Ho hum!"

Let face it, people did the same with Million Dollar Baby last year.

It's the way of the Oscars. People love to shoot 'em down.

Also, I have a cold. My nose is running and I'm very sick.
