Starting January 1, 2015, I am going to start watching Dawson's Creek, the beloved (remembered?) teen drama that ran from 1998 to 2003. I am going to attempt to do this straight through, start to finish, without sleeping. I am going to do this for charity.
My name is Pete. You may remember me from Flapjackalypse, the pancake-eating marathon for charity. You may know me from Scientific Podcast Goes Boink. You may not know me at all, but I'm glad you're here. You can keep up with all the latest updates about the upcoming event by following me on Twitter (@sorryeveryone) or here at Progressive Boink.
I imagine you might have some questions, and with that in mind I have prepared an FAQ. If you have more questions feel free to drop them in the comments or twitter at me and I'll do my best to answer them. Hope to see you in January!
Why are you doing this?
Because it's there. Also, for charity!
Which charity?
Whichever one you want! I'm hoping people will donate to whatever charity they favor, then forward their donation receipt to me (scientificpod @ gmail) so I can keep a cumulative total and arrange for rewards. If you really can't decide I will have a few suggestions when the actual event rolls around.
Rewards?
Yes! More on this later, but it will likely revolve around my habit of writing poetry and fiction about stupid pop culture things.
No but really, why are you doing this?
There is literally no good reason. I happened to be bouncing around Wikipedia and saw that there were 128 episodes. I did the math and that's about 93 hours, which is just shy of four days, and that seemed to fit together so neatly that I found myself powerless to resist the idea. Also I think it will be funny, and for the rest of my life I'll be able to say "one time I tried to watch Dawson's Creek straight through."
Do you really think you can stay up for four straight days?
No I do not. I have budgeted in some time to crash but overall I am hoping to make it through in as straight a fashion as possible.
What episode are you most looking forward to watching?
I don't know! I have seen exactly one thing from Dawson's Creek. It is the scene where Michelle Williams says "penis" to her grandmother. Other than that I have no idea what I'm in for. This is my primary concern, that I will get halfway in and the show will not even be an interesting sort of bad, but it is a risk I am willing to take.
At some point you might pass out from exhaustion, dream about dawson's creek, wake up, and be faced with the challenge of sorting out what is canon from what you dreamed. How do you feel about this?
I'm excited for it and when it happens I will immediately write a script and kickstarter a show reboot.
What about showering, eating, using the facilities and the like?
I intend to do these things during credit sequences or during scenes drawing on particularly bad b-plots. I cannot guarantee those bad b-plots will exist, but I am playing a hunch.
Are you going to watch the theme song and the credits every time?
I don't know! Not watching them (or the theme song, at least) seems contrary to the spirit of what I'm attempting here, but I also don't know if Dawson's Creek is one of those old shows with a long theme song or one of the newer ones, where they realized no one gives a toot about that sort of thing. Also I might need the time. I reserve the right to do as I see fit.
