So I am thinking about buying one of these things for the train to work, since I have run out of games to play on my GBA and can't find anything else fun.
Should I? What are some good games on the system? I would probably buy Nintendogs and Animal Crossing and that new Mario and Luigi game, but after that I am drawing blanks. Are there any great games coming out on PSP that make it worth the extra expenditure, or is it a glorified video player? Also, is this new model of the DS going to be more expensive? Is it even out yet? Should I bother waiting for that?

I'd say you wouldn't be disappointed buying a DS. I'm not sure when the slim version is due out, but you might want to wait for it since the old version is being phased out altogether. The Castlevania game is the only one I've played myself on the DS, and it's fantastic. I've also seen more highly-reviewed games for the DS than I would have ever though, so they're definitely doing something right. Not to mention, you can still play all those GBA games on it.

Going with the PSP depends mainly on if you want to pay for the extra. It does have some good games and, it would seem, more flexibility as far as media options (games, movies, music, etc.), so I don't think it'd be a bad choice.

Personally, I own Nintendogs, and I'd advise against getting it. As fun as it is to start, and as clever and appealing as the AI is, if you're remotely a 'Breakfast Serious' gamer, you'll likely get bored with it before too long, as I have. The onyl real gameplay of the game consists of the tournaments you play to win money, and those get very repetitive very quickly.

As for other games to buy that you haven't mentioned?

Advance Wars - My favourite game that I've played, tons of depth, great game.
Yoshi's Touch and Go - Very simple, quite arcade, nothing more than a high-score chasing game really, but still quite good fun.
Mario64 - Even if you've played the N64 one, this has more stars and a heap of ace minigames.
WarioWare - Another simple game, but also loads of fun.
Another Code/Trace Memory - Shortish but excellent point-and-click style adventure game.
Mario Kart - It's Mario Kart, what more needs to be said.
Sonic Rush - Quality 2D game, the way Sonic should be.
Viewtiful Joe - Not played the DS version, but the GC one is ace.

Not to mention the fact that we have a new Super Mario Bros, Worms, Resident Evil and Metroid Prime Hunters all coming, among others.

Do you own a GBA?

EDIT: Tarnation, beaten by minutes to four of my recommendations!

I own a PSP, and I can't stop playing emulators of Genesis and Nintendo on it. And on top of that, I have GTA, Dynasty Warriors, and Tiger Woods Golf, all great games, and I'm getting Katamari in March. I have a 512 MB card for it and it holds mp3's all over the place. PSP is amazing.

The emulation aspect of the PSP is intruiging, but it doesn't work with the newer versions of the PSP, right? So I would have to buy one off someone used and hope they didn't upgrade the firmware? And how easy to set up is it? It sounds a bit like a whole lot of work that I don't have the time or inclination to get myself involved with.

Would I like Advance Wars assuming I enjoy strategic RPGs but hate RTS games? And your comments about Nintendogs are saddening me. Yeah, I own a GBA. The games I have on it now include Warioware, Zelda: ALttP, FFTA, FF1&2, and Pokemon.

People have hacked every version of the PSP firmware within days of it's release, so I don't think it'd be very hard to keep up with it. Also, using emulators on the PSP is incredibly easy, from what I understand. Pretty much just having it and the games on a memory stick and selecting it. I didn't mention that before because I didn;t know if it'd be a selling point for you, but yeah, the PSP seems amazingly versatile as far as modding goes.

No matter whether it was used or new, as soon as you bought a new game it would automatically install the newest firmware. But it's always being broken after it's been out a while, so I wouldn't be too concerned about that.

Advance Wars really doesn't have much to do with RTS -- starting with the fact that it's not real time. The only part that's like an RTS is that your units can't be upgraded or levelled up, they just are what they are and you figure out how best to use them. Beyond that, it's more like FFT or Disgaea. Except with, y'know, tanks.

As for DS games to look for, there's Castlevania, there's Kirby Canvas Curse, and New Super Mario Bros., which comes out in May. I too would advise against Nintendogs. It does get old after a while.

I have both systems, but I haven't used either in a long while. I'd say the DS has more prospects for good games than the PSP, though. I can't think of anything out or coming soon for it that I'd care about other than GTA and Katamari, and both of those have been getting lower ratings than their console counterparts.

Well as Bill said, it's a turn-based strategy rather than a real-time, and since you've listed FF:TA as one of your GBA games, you probably will like it. Given that you've got a GBA actually, you could just get one of the Advance Wars for that. I've heard AW2 is every bit as good as the DS version, but I've not played it myself.

The only real reason I asked if you had a GBA though was just that if you didn't, the list of reasons to own a DS quadruple, given all the quality GBA games there are out there.

Emulation and down-grading is easy. The first time is a little scary, but I'll post the method I used if you buy a PSP. When I get Katamari, I'll have to update to a new version, but I'm sure there will be a new downloader somewhere out there days after its release.

I'd kinda like to get a PSP, but I have enough trouble finding time to play console games.

Prove or disprove the following mathematical sentence:

Sony PSP > Nintendo DS

The DS has Mario Kart. Which can be played online. Wirelessly.

PSP has easy emulation of NES, Genesis, SNES, and Neo Geo games, and I'm sure that MAME will be great if given time (the version I had was odd).

I'd break it down as such:

If you want a handheld that you can use for many functions, you can mod, play movies, play music and only play a few of the system games, but the PSP.

If you want a handheld where you're going to just be playing games for the system, plus something with backwards compatability, go with the DS.

If you do go with the PSP, also remember you have to buy the system, memory and games and it will end up being more expensive. The DS you could probably buy a bundle pack and get one game already.

I own a DS and I really like it, the stylus games are fun and I enjoy the WiFi stuff. I think if I had a PSP I would only use it to mod and at this point, I don't think I would want to spend that much more money to play games that I can play at home for free.

I would be incredibly surprised if they had that policy!
What games are you getting?

Oh and Bill/anyone else, do you have any information about when that new fangled DS will be out in America (or Australia)?

Thank you for the help everyone!

edit: I have one more concern: how hard is it to use the stylus when you are holding the DS in one hand? Would it be particularly hard to use on the train or similar?

I don't find it difficult to use the stylus, it's pretty easy to manuever, and the games are designed so you either use the stylus or the buttons, not both at once. I would think it'd be easy to use on the train.
