Just because I write all this stuff somewhere else now doesn't mean we can't talk about it here.
http://www.errormacro.com/2006/03/the_sony_conference_in_a_nutsh.html
Sony just finished up its big press briefing, with a number of tidbits about the PS3 spilling out in the process. Sony's aiming at a worldwide release in November. Postulate amongst yourselves here about how cataclysmically this will fail. |

On the live thing, it'll probably mean that if it's Christmas in real life, it's Christmas in Resident Evil. _________________

| So they're going to incorporate the PSP's GPS ability into a golf game. I guess maybe they're hoping to allow the player to play golf on a course based on where they happen to be standing. I have no idea how that would turn out, but I'm really curious about it. |

There are two ways this could go. One would be for a random factory in say, Taiwan, which manufactures widgets or some other arbitrary piece of equipment needed to manufacture the hardware, will burn to the ground forcing them to cut shipments. Or, if all of the units do go out on time, there's going to be some sort of horrid flaw in the design which causes them to implode, opening up a rift in the time-space continuum, pulling in those unfortunate enough to have adopted early.
Oh, and if they want to broaden the PSP playing demographic, maybe they should stop releasing a slew of generic sports/racing/action games for it and focus on getting third-parties to develop more abstract software like Me and My Katamari which appeals to a different crowd than just Daterape McFratboy. _________________ Boys are rotten! But haven't you seen the commercials, Justin? The PSP appeals to people who do CRAZY THINGS while they play! For example, riding in a shopping cart, walking down a crowded street, or waving a PSP around spasmically which seems to prevent any form of concentration! Also watching a movie and listening to music!
Also Franz Ferdinand! _________________

The PSP is clearly not just for the video gaming. _________________

A PS1 emulator for the PSP disagrees. But yes, using the team behind the Pop Tart ads might not have been the best choice. And I can only see myself buying a handful of the games they have right now. The best reasons to buy one right now are all illegal. _________________

I'm not gonna lie, the new Syphon Filter looks pretty phenomenal. There are times when it's hard to believe that it's a portable game. However, other than that and maybe Katamari, I have no interest in the system. _________________

It's like nut, but outside.
I'll be getting Katamari next Tuesday, which should probably ruin my PSP's ability to play emulators. Hopefully, someone has made a way around the newest firmware upgrade that Katamari will force me to install. Also, what percentage of video game players that play Gamecube or XBox 360 are male? 92% as opposed to the 96% that PSP has? _________________

The new GTA coming out for the PS2 in a month was a pretty major blow to me justifying getting one. The likelihood of me spending about a third of the price to get one of the old "fat" DSes is a lot higher. _________________

Yeah, when I bought my PSP, I didn't really have any of those tricky "expenses" to worry about. And then I bought my house and seriously considered selling it, until I got GTA/Dynasty Warriors/Katamari in a week. And now with the emulators, I use it every day for when games get boring.
And I missed the info about a new GTA coming out for PS2; where was that at? Edit: Oh, LCS will be on PS2 now. _________________

Okay, the PSP isn't for PSP gaming, then.
Nothing about the PSP, currently or just announced, interests me. I'd probably use it to watch videos off the memory card if I went any place where I was sitting around with nothing to do for long periods of time.
When they were talking about demographics I seem to recall them saying that most PSPs are played at home. At home I have several machines capable of playing PS1 games. I have my own PS1 games, and many others can be bought at the local game shop or on Ebay for ten bucks or less. And then I actually have a copy of it. I'm sure Sony will charge at least five, probably closer to ten dollars per game, and that's to put it on a memory stick capable of holding a couple games at best (unless it's a 2 GB stick), and if you want to get a new game after that.. what? You just have to delete the old game you paid for?
That doesn't even get into what titles they'll offer. MGS? Gran Turismo? Are they just going to sift through their Greatest Hits line, which is full of games millions of people have already played? Would they release GT or GT2, or hold back for fear that it would compete with GT4 Mobile? Bah.

I don't know if specific numbers have ever been released, but in general about 40% of all gamers are female. The 360 is still a little early to tell, but I'd say a lot more than 8% of the GC audience is female. It has a lot that appeals to multiple demographics.

Part of the reason a PS1 emulator seems cool to me is because I've just spent some time looking for some PS1 games in EB and Gamestop, and all I could find was about 60 copies of Syphon Filter and FF VIII. It started because I was trying to find a copy of Castlvania: SotN (since I never played it when it was originally released and the DS has recently reminded me how awesome 2-D Castlevania games are), and I couldn't find one online or otherwise for under $40. It sucks because it seems like just recently that I would see kiosks in Target selling all kinds of PS1 games for $10 a pop, but it looks like the library has finally evolved into the collectors-only realm. _________________

You can move anything from the memory stick to your computer easily, so this shouldn't be a problem. In fact, the only problem I could see would be on Playstation's side, because then I could just put it on my computer and send it to anyone I wanted for free. Which would probably mean you can only put them onto the PSP directly from a Sony site, which would then revert to your problem.
Not that I want the PS1 emulator anyway, but I'm just sayin's all. _________________

Metal Gear Acid actually brings the "interesting and unique PSP games" quotient to two, and I always think it deserves more love, because I enjoyed it when I played it. Most people think it's just MGS for the PSP, but it's not at all. The dynamics of "hide 'n shoot things" are the same, but the gameplay is utterly different. Turn-based card game strategy in a third-person action-adventure environment? Say what now?
As for the news itself, I'm confused as to how the hell an Eye Toy is suppsoed to work on a handheld console. I mean, yeah, now we can add "webcam" to the list of the PSP's abilities, but as an Eye Toy itself? They expect fun motion-sensor based games to be player by people holding the thing at different lengths apart, in public, on possibly moving transport? Good luck. |

SOTN might be offered just for how much of a classic it is now, but I have doubts as to how many of those other, lesser known games will make it. When the emulator news broke, some people on the Gamespot board started going "OMFG LEGEND OF DRAGOON ON PSP FTMFWLOLBBQ!!!" Don't hold your breath there kids. Besides that game's 4 discs anyway. Which is another thing, I'm sure FFVII will be one of the games everyone will be asking for, but there won't be enough people with a stick big enough to hold it.
Normally I'm not the one to advocate piracy, but you realize you can find ISOs of PSX games if you're really desperate.

Well obviously you can do just about anything with a memory card and a USB connection. But I meant in an official sense. Sony isn't going to say "hey just copy these to your HD," which means that, officially, they'll have to be advocating deleting games that you paid for. Unless they offer something where you can redownload games you've already bought for free. |

Yeah you'd probably register or something and get a user-sensitive code for redownloading.
Yay we just solved a problem that Sony probably already figured out. _________________

That's probably the best Castlevania game ever released. It's worth the 40 bucks, assuming they don't relrelease it in some suped up version for PS2/PSP/DS. Just look at the new Megaman games for PSP. I saw one running at EB and I have to say, it's pretty sweet. And with the PSP dropping to 200 bucks sans headphones I'll never use and memory card too small for anything but game saves, I might just have to pick one up. |
