Oh, I've been watching Arrested Development a lot (on the subject of "not really a movie but last thing I watched). Season two, this time (thanks Jim )
My favorite character has to be GOB. |

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
I liked it, quite a bit. It was well done. The casting was near perfect, and it was a faithful adaptation of the book, with Terry Gilliam's direction doing a fair job of carrying over the feeling of the book. That said:
My main problem with the movie is the same problem I have with the book, and it's not so much a problem with the book (and by extension, movie), it's a problem with the people who read (watch) it. I'm going to come off like a pompous ass here, but I don't give a shit. I've read every fucking word that man has ever published, from his stellar "Generation of Swine" era stuff, to his really really shitty "Hey Rube" stuff, to the three volumes of his personal correspondence. What he was going for in that book is missed by 99% of the people who read it. The touches he used to achieve what he was going for were very, very subtle, and as such, they're easy to miss. I missed them the first two times I read the book. I didn't really feel like I absolutely got the book until I had read his personal correspondence, where he goes through the various incarnations of the book. (At one point, it's a 600 page non-fiction work.) But my point is that the touches that make the book what it is (by which I mean "more than a story about doing drugs" ) are very subtle. There are similar touches put into the movie, but they're just as subtle. While this is good in that it stays true to the book, it's bad in that so many people miss the point.
My only other major problem is when his Attorney is getting on the plane. They stick a quote from "Generation of Swine" in, a quote about the man the attorney is based on, Oscar Acosta. The movie quote ends up something like
| Quote: |
| There he goes...one of God's own prototypes -a high powered mutant of some kind who was never considered for mass production. He was too weird to live, and too rare to die. |
But without the rest of the quote, it doesn't really mean anything. Matter of fact, forget the rest of the quote; without the preceding tales of Oscar Zeta Acosta, the whole thing is meaningless. In the movie, the attorney is nothing but a drug fiend, plain and simple. Oscar was a complicated character, and the attorney is not. Matter of fact, the quote is a very specific reaction to Oscar's death, or lack thereof. See, Oscar just up and disappeared one day. A couple of people said they saw him a few months later, but no one really bought it. One day, he was just gone. Never heard from again, missing, presumed dead, the whole deal. And he disappeared because he was "too weird to live, and too rare to die". (Not that Thompson doesn't think he's dead, but you get the point.) To just tack the quote on there at the end of the movie didn't really accomplish much, and knowing where it was taken from, it rubbed me the wrong way.
A damn good movie, though. I quite enjoyed it. _________________ "You're a pussy, Strong!"

I just tried to watch that last week, and I couldn't finish it, simply because the narration bothered me for some reason...I've never read the book, but maybe I'll try to watch it again this weekend.
why does this movie seem to have taken such a surge in popularity lately? Is it the Johnny Depp movement? Or is it just not as old as I thought it was? _________________

Watched Badlands. Thought it was pretty alright. There's something about Sissy Spacek that creeps me out. I liked all of the shots of the sky though, because I like those kinds of things. _________________ them's jokes, boy |

Tonight my ladyfriend and I watched History of the World Part I because she hadn't seen all of it and I hadn't seen it in a long time. Good old fun.
Last night we completed our Wes Anderson romp by watching Bottle Rocket. 'Twas short and sweet and clever. Owen and Luke Wilson are always kind of the same characters but it was a fun watch nonetheless. I've always wanted to be a thief. |

| JFK. Christ I'd forgotten how good that movie was. I seem to be the only one in the universe who thinks Oliver Stone movies are (mostly) more than just pretentious crap, but even Stone haters have trouble finding things to complain about with this one. I almost cried both times I saw it during the final courtroom monologue. |

I was forced to watch WRONG TURN when I went CAMPING...in WEST VIRGINIA.
It's a damn good thing that movie sucked, or else I might have been afraid the cannibals would get me.
UGH. That movie was AWFUL.
Also, oh Wesley, what have they done to you? *downgrade* |
I spent the entire time watching Wrong Turn asking my friend, "Wait was that the wrong turn?" |

On an unrelated note, how does watching crappy horror movies constitute as camping? People come to Cape Cod and rent campsites all the time, but there's running water and electricity and bathrooms and a pool at most sites. Its like what I'd construe as camping is when my friends and I would take a tent or two, some lighter fluid, beer, and lots of food into a random plot of woods.
Maybe I'm just out of touch with the kids these days. |

I think they rented a cabin out in the woods, or something.
Also, Katie, I love you, but it's WESTLY, no Wesly. Sorry, small pet peeve. _________________ I am the black Jim Thome. |

whew... glad i'm not the only one... these spoiled kids, i swear. I knew a guy that didn't wanna go camping with his family because he wouldn't be able to get internet access or a newspaper. |

I remember being younger, and telling families that came camping with us that what they were doing didn't count, because they had a camper, and weren't sleeping in tents. I was kidding, but only sort of. _________________ "You're a pussy, Strong!"

I think it may even be Westley. I am not sure, but as a Wesley, I can say it is definitely not Wesly. It is a LARGE pet peeve of mine.
It started in ESS (Extended School Services). We would get fake money for doing whatever we did in ESS and they'd put our names on each dollar so no one could steal each other's money. This is a good tactic, which I still use today. Invariably, every stupid ESS adult would spell my name in some ridiculous fashion. Wessley... Weseley... Wesly... Sometimes even with another vowel in there like an 'a' or 'i'. I would like to think Wesley is a fairly common name and I demand perfection in spelling! Any other variation of Wesley (besides with a 't') does not exist. It's like writing Emily as Emmily or Emilly or Eminemily.
EDIT: Mike wins, I am a slow writer... |

Saw Unleashed.
It was more 'feel good' than I expected. Funny you can say that about a movie where Jet Li pucheds a guy in the throat three times and kills him. _________________ Flame-broiled souls. |

I saw The Big Lebowski. It was okay. I think it needs more re-viewing for me to catch some of the nuances of it.
I also saw The Boondock Saints. It was like a baptism. _________________ HEY PAUL |

Every time they did something stupid my friend goes "wrong turn". Sadly, that movie actually scared her. *headdesk*

I at least had the 'ey' at the end. And yes, we rented a cabin in the woods at a CAMPGROUND. We didn't really call it camping though, and we were all very aware that it was completely wussy to get a cabin. We just didn't really care. |
