I recently acquired GTA: San Andreas and I love the shit out of it. I'd played GTA III and Vice City, but this is just so damn ambitious and involving. I also enjoy how they seem to have given up on sort of loosely mimicking New York, Miami, etc. and have pretty much just replicated L.A., San Francisco, and Las Vegas (though with many geographical liberties taken, obviously). _________________ WHEN THE AFRICAN LION ATTACKS |

Yeah, I picked up a copy about two months ago and that's all I've been playing since then.
I also mentioned this to Mike in relation to his Pixels article:
"I can shoot a whole bunch of pedestrians, blow up heaps of shit and get chased by the cops for hours... and then I can stop all that, walk to the top of the highest mountain and enjoy a beautifully rendered sunrise over the horizon. I can appreciate that a programmer created that sunrise out of practically nothing, just bits of code. But they made it beautiful."
Something I like doing is just exploring the SA areas, whether it's climbing the top of a tall mountain or just walking along the coast line. I'm totally getting joy from some of the most mundane activities of the game. _________________ A suitable ending, I think! |

That's a huge part of what I love about the game; the graphics are hardly stellar technologically, but they're so well-executed. The whole setting is more California than California. It's just so evocative. This might seem like a stretch, but it's the same reason I love a lot of medieval literature: it so evokes a concept of a place and time that exists in our cultural consciousness but that never really quite existed. Same goes for San Andreas. It pieces together a walking, breathing city from rap songs, photographs, and early '90s gangsta movies, and it instantly registers with us (or with me anyway). I suppose it's all part of our culture's dreamy nostalgia (not in terms of "do you to remember menace ii society," but in terms of nostalgia's actual meaning), but I just love shit like that. _________________ WHEN THE AFRICAN LION ATTACKS |

No, that's perfect. It's like it creates sort of a hyperbolic ideal of the setting.
I just got it for the Xbox. I had made it to San Fierro on the PS2 version, then petered out a bit. It still sunk more time into that game on the whole than probably 95% of anything else that's been put into my PS2. I still have some issues with the Xbox version control-wise (having only two shoulder buttons makes drive-bys awful; on PS2, I was fucking can opener), but the boost in the visuals brings out what Kyle mentioned. Say what you want about the tired crime genre and the bad effect the series has had on the image of gaming, few games have been made that are as ambitious, and that just beg to be played as much as this one.
Holy crap, I forgot about base jumping. I'm going to do that tonight. _________________

Three most recently played games:
Pokémon FireRed
Pokémon Emerald
Pokémon Colosseum (I bought this one so I can trade between my two GBA games easier)

Pokemon games are like crack. There's so simple but so goddamn enjoyable once you start GOTTA CATCH 'EM ALLing. I've never had any of the console versions, but I've owned one from every handheld series (Red, Gold, Sapphire, LeafGreen), and knowing myself I'll no doubt end up buying the DS version at some point too. The worst bit is, when one of my friends made fun of how all Pokemon games are almost exactly the same game, I couldn't disagree with him, and yet I still play them.
The weirdest thing about Pokemon games is that the only real reason to play them so much really is simply to amass all those damn monsters. I played a copy of Emerald on an emulator once, and since I could cheat to give myself any pokemon I wanted, all the desire to actually play the game instantly vanished, and I never touched it again. |

Smackdown vs. Raw 2006.
I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do the freaking Royal Rumble. I can get the guys over the top rope, but I"m terrible at preventing them from coming back into the ring.
Also I (as John Cena) lost my first match against the British Bulldog (dead). _________________

Just grapple at them when they're standing on the apron and mash the hell out of your buttons when the ringout meter comes up.
Or just use Andre and instantly toss everyone. |

I found myself doing that while playing the REmake. Oh, and I might have been crying like a little girl at the time. 50-50 shot.
Picked up Phantom Brave too. I'd compare the story unfavorably with having one's testicles slammed in a phone book, but the battles have been engaging so far. They give you the option of skipping the story altogether, which is a feature I'll avail myself of soon enough. _________________ It took Jesus 3 days to respawn. Man, talk about lag. |

Just replayed Genso Suikoden I and II. Suikoden II is easily one of the best PSone RPGs out there. Its only flaw is the horrible localization.
I'm pumped for Suikoden V. It's supposed to be almost as good as Suikoden II. So there's that, then Kingdom of Hearts 2, then God of War. I'm going to be busy. |

Suikoden 3 and 4 were certainly blah at best. I hope they can reignite the series into what it probably should have become after the greatness of 2. _________________ It took Jesus 3 days to respawn. Man, talk about lag. |

Katamari comes out tomorrow for PSP. Never will there be such an enjoyable yet thumb-hurting train ride as Wednesday morning. _________________ Asked yesterday whether it would eventually release a revised edition of "Opal Mehta," a little brown spokesman declined to comment. |

So I've been muckin' about with this new game "GUN" on the playstation machine. Like a western style shooting game. It might be my fascination with Roy Rogers and John Wayne, but I think it's quite fun.
First shooting game I've really taken a liking to since the time I played Doom for a week, constantly dying every 5 seconds. _________________ Lambeau MacAoidh |

Every time a consumer buys a copy of GUN somebody from Rockstar moves into a bigger house
I grabbed Black from work the other night. Its mindless fun, but I'm glad I didn't have to pay anything to play it.
Oh, and the demo for Okami was packaged with this month's OPM. It rocks SO HORD! _________________
Didn't you know? Having uncontrollable shits is wicked scene.
|

He's lamenting the plight of the tortured game developers that don't have the cushy jobs that the folks at Rockstar do.
Even though Rockstar didn't make Gun.
And also ignore that he said he rented an EA game in the next breath. _________________
