Lucha Libre uses the term Torneo Cibernetico (cybernetic tournament) for multi-man elimination matches. Sometimes in these matches, there can be only one winner so even after the other team has been eliminated, former team mates face each other in an elimination match.
It's Lucha Libre, so basic rules apply like there being no tag necessary if one of the wrestlers leaves the ring and the goddamn air horn.
Thanks for talking about the match though. Did anybody else watch it? Come on, let's discuss, folks! _________________

In the interest of wanting to see this feature continue, I spose I, a lifelong WWE fan, will weigh in.
First impressions consisted of "Wow, these are some highly impressive high spots and move variations that I've never seen before and are very fluid and well done[/runon sentence]! But a majority of this seems more like elaborate dancing than wrestling."
As the match progressed I tried to get a feel for match psychology until I realized there didn't really seem to be any, at least any that I would comprehend. Wild risks were taken for seemingly little gain, most notably the spot where instead of continuing the match someone thrown up on the ropes would opt to leap onto the growing mass of wrestlers on the outside.
Wrestlers were pinned very easily it seemed as well. I started to settle into a groove of accepting that this seemed to be more of an exhibition of the art of lucha lubre rather than trying to find a story or understand any motivations behind anything.
After viewing some of the more spectacular transitions, combos and exchanges, I began to wonder how much of this was "called" and how much was scripted. It all seemed terribly complex and I couldn't comprehend how this fast paced action could be scripted OR called in the middle of the ring. That's what probably impressed me the most.
Overall, pretty enjoyable, lots of cool moves, my favorite being the Spanish Fly. But it's not a type of wrestling I could really get behind or be interested in seeing more of. _________________

Just got a chance to watch.
Contrived spots take me out of it but if the spot is cool enough I can enjoy it for the physicality/athleticism.
No psychology is a huge problem but if it's just going to be a spotfest then it's just a spotfest. I won't enjoy the match but there will be parts that I thought were impressive.
Cheap pins I can deal with since I don't have any investment in any of the characters and in a match with 10 people they have get down to the last two somehow.
Overall, not a very enjoyable match but some parts were decent so I would be able to appreciate something...
but that f*****g airhorn. |

Like people would talk shit about the spot fests in ECW or some of the ones in WWE, but in this one it didn't even seem like half of the wrestlers had even a mild interest in winning. _________________

This match is hilarious. Matt Whittle & I have a running joke where we try to top the other person with how ridiculous a spot can be, & its more or less devolved into us talking about a pyramid of guys standing on the top rope and then they all just jump. You don't know who's giving the move and who's taking the bump because they all just jump. Oh, and the match takes place inside of a moon bounce which is shaped as a gigantic clown.
This match is basically my wet "everybody just jumps" match. Its so hilariously over the top and I love every second of it. Wrestling is funny in that I can accept Kane having violated a corpse, Mae Young birthing a hand & Eddie pullin' jokes on his ODELAY VATO MA FAMILIAS Rey-Rey from BEYYYYYOND THE GRAAAAAAVE OOOOOWWEEEEEOOOOOOOOO~~~! but something like a lucha spotfest is what makes me think "y'know, I'm pretty sure this pushes the tangibility of wrestling's level of belief over the edge." _________________ [quote="Bismark"]Didn't you know? Man, I wish I had friends I could joke like that with around here. I have a couple "smarkish" friends but they don't live here anymore and even then we didn't ever get into jokes about spots or anything.
Most of them just centered around how much we loved Gene Snitsky. _________________

If these guys got paid for every hurricanrana or armdrag that they did, they'd be billionaires. Christ's sake...
Also, with the exception of Mr. Bullhorn, could that crowd have seemed any less into the match? Puro crowds are notoriously quiet at times, but that's to be expected since the Japanese are a reserved folk. But you would expect a livlier crowd in Mexico, no? _________________

I liked it. I liked it quite a bit. As for it being choreographed, here's how I look at it: There are rules within the world of lucha libre that all fighters adhere to. There is a certain way things are done, and that way includes lots of gratuitous armdrags and dives to the outside. It becomes a test of will and technique. Rudos will cheat inside that structure, by hitting low, and double teaming the technico, but they don't cheat outside of that structure, by say, not feeing a technico the arm and letting him fall on his face. It's the same reason guys don't no sell Irish whips: There are basic rules everyone needs to abide by to make everything work. Does that make any sense to anyone else? It's not gospel or anything on lucha, it's just how I explain it to myself so that it makes sense. So I liked it. It's a fast-paced exhibition of high-flying skill and technique; what's not to love?
Other notes:
- Virus is awesome. He's a mobile little porky fellow, and his little run up the ringpost on the outside rules.
- The series of dives to the outside spot is only half as ridiculous as it normally is because the camera doesn't show the guy just standing there waiting to get hit.
- Ricky Marvin is twice as awesome as Virus is, with his spinning springboard whatthefuckever to the outside. Then he take the Psichosis bump on the hurracarana. (Psichosis probably didn't invent that bump, he's just the first person I saw do it. It's when he jumps and flips over onto his head rather than rolling through a hurricarana.) Then Marvin takes a fucking great bump to the outside towards the end. I'm going to have to search out some Ricky Marvin in NOAH stuff, just to see what he can do there.
A nice change of pace, good pick, B. _________________ "You're a pussy, Strong!"

That crowd reminded me of any crowd at any wrestling match in the mid-to-late eighties, what with the abundance of old ladies and middle-aged men in polo shirts. _________________ And this is a promise, because this is true. This is real. This is Straight Edge.

I thought the crowd was into it, just not in the way they would be if they were an American crowd. Also, there's no microphone on them. They certainly weren't as rabid as I've seen them, though. _________________ "You're a pussy, Strong!"

I think that it's funny that when people see different cultures watching wrestling, they tend to think the corwd is "not into it" or "subdued" because they're not holding signs or acting like jackasses. _________________ And this is a promise, because this is true. I was really pulling for virus in this one, for the same reasons pholby stated. And I laughed really hard when the one announcer said, "North Americans pronounce it VI-RUSS," and the other guy corrects him saying "here we say VEE-ROOOOOOOOOOS!!!" _________________

Compare the atmosphere during this match to a Mexican soccer match. They were subdued. _________________
