Another school year has begun, and I couldn't be happier. Even though each
fall at Penn comes with a new round of sports related nonsense, it feels good to be able
to educate.
I had a rather strange encounter today. At the end of one of my classes I noticed a young
man wearing a T-shirt with the words, "Bo knows. . ." on it. I, naturally,
assumed it to be a reference to the nomadic, gypsy-like people of French Guana who
celebrate at Christmas time an all-seeing prophet called, "Bo" who brings good
fortune, much like American children do Santa Claus. I couldn't have been more wrong, as
it turns out the boy's shirt was merely a popular ad campaign featuring some professional
athlete who is lauded for knowing how to play not one, but two games. It disappoints me to
think that just twenty years ago, college students took to the streets exclaiming,
"Make love, not war!" And now not only do the kids of today not have anything to
exclaim, but they shroud themselves in the propaganda of a shoe corporation. The day Nike
tells me I should be like my local librarian is the day I eat my proverbial hat.
I must go now, Patricia is coming over again. I found out that she is the only other Fats
Domino fan under 50, so I'm going to test just how much she knows about the land of 1,000
dances.
