Post subject: P-Boi Forum: 50 Favorite Simpsons Characters |
|
|
Here's how it works!
You were asked to send me a list of your 25 favorite Simpsons characters from the television program "the bart simpson show". 29 ballots were received, and the characters were ranked on a point system allowing 25 points for a #1 choice, 24 for a #2, and all the way down to 1 point for #25. The points were added up, and what follows are your selections.
Tiebreakers work like such: If two characters have equal pointage (and neither got a number 1 vote), the character that appeared on the most lists ranks higher. If those characters appeared on the same amount of lists, I went with whatever ranked highest on the individual list. A character that was someone's #4 beats another person's #6, for example. And then if they still were tied I just picked one so shut up.
What we don't want: your entire lists posted, cloggin' up yer thread
What we do want: everything else. Bitch/kick yourself/pontificate as much as you want, because that's the point!
The countdown begins now. Let your conversations begin~!

"You sunk my battleship."
50. Jasper Beardley - 43 points
(5 of 29 lists. Highest ranking - #11 Spoodles)
Jasper is one of the more elderly residents of Springfield, and a resident of Springfield Retirement Castle, along with Abe Simpson and Old Jewish Man. His most distinguishing trait and the origin of his name is his waist-long beard. He is voiced by Harry Shearer.
According to "The Sweetest Apu", Jasper is a veteran of World War II. Jasper also tried to avoid going to World War II by disguising himself as a woman and staying in Springfield to play in the women's baseball league, along with his friend Abe, who was also avoiding the war.
A deleted and thus non-canon scene from the episode "In Marge We Trust," contained on the The Simpsons Eighth Season DVD, reveals that Jasper preceded Reverend Lovejoy as minister at the Simpsons' church in Springfield. |

"Iron helps us play!"
49. Rod and Todd Flanders - 48 points
(4 of 29 lists. Highest ranking - #11 Emily)
Rod and Todd, like their parents, are very religious. The brothers enjoy attending church, watching religious cartoons, and playing religious-themed board games, such as "Good Samaritan." Maude and Ned prohibit them from consuming foods containing sugar, as they fear it will make them behave badly (or send them into diabetic shock, in the case of Rod). They are also extremely entomophobic (particularly moths and ladybugs), a behavior probably learned from their father, as he considers an insect flying near someone an 'attack.' They like stories about robots, though these also frighten them.
Both play with a mock-up newspaper press, and take the activity very seriously. ("This just in, playtime is fun!") They are both also very gullible, walking into a wall when told by "God" (actually Bart Simpson on a radio-transmitting microphone) that He would make it disappear for them. |

"Did you know that disco record sales were up 400% for the year ending 1976? If these trends continue... ayyyyyy!"
48. Disco Stu - 55 points
(6 of 29 lists. Highest ranking - #3 randy)
Disco Stu first appeared in the episode "Two Bad Neighbors", during a neighborhood yard sale day. Near the beginning of the episode Homer and Marge search their attic for items that might sell. Marge suggests Homer's old Rhinestone Night's Fashion Gun. Homer protests, "...I need it to rhinestone up my old clothing!" Marge then holds up Homer's old leather jacket complete with rhinestone lettering. "Who's Disco Stu?" Marge asks, referring to the words on the back. Homer explains, "I wanted to write 'Disco Stud' but I ran out of space. Not that Disco Stu didn't get his share of the action!" Disco Stu becomes a character later in the episode as part of a callback gag. Homer solicits his jacket to patrons of the rummage sale; One of them calls out "Hey Stu! You should buy that!". Disco Stu is revealed and says, "Disco Stu...doesn't advertise."
In the season sixteen episode "There's Something About Marrying", it is revealed that Disco Stu was Selma's fourth husband. However, he receives an annulment from Pope John Paul II. He was originally voiced by Phil Hartman in the episode "Two Bad Neighbors", but when the animators needed to do a model change, Phil wasn't available to redub the voice, so Hank Azaria took it over. |

"Jesus is our only King."
47. Jimbo Jones - 57 points
(5 of 29 lists. Highest ranking - #4 White Panther)
Jimbo Jones can often be seen hanging around Nelson, Kearney, and Dolph. He is generally acknowledged as the leader of this clique. His dominant characteristics may appeal to a wider group as well. In the episode See Homer Run, Jimbo runs for mayor of Springfield, with the slogan, "Tough on nerds, tougher on dorks."
Jimbo's first name is Corky (Bart the Fink) but also has been referred to as James (Lisa's Date with Density). He enjoys intimidating his schoolmates and shoplifting. In one episode it is hinted that he comes from a well-off family, displayed when—with the school closed for a teacher's strike—he and his mother watch soap operas and sip tea together in a very nice living room. Given that his father seemed to be a beer-drinking lowlife when seen in another episode, it may be that Jimbo is an illegitimate child. His mother may be involved with "bad boys", in the episode Million dollar Abie, Sideshow Mel said to Jimbo "isn't your mother a well known whore?" In a rhetorical sense, to which Jimbo implied Mel was correct.
Also, that quote up there about Jesus is one of my very favorite Simpsons moments ever. |

The Jimbo quote I would have gone with is, "Now my pants are chafing me." _________________ Everybody who checks into room 1408 dies. You could be next, John Cusack! |

The hardest part of this list has got to be picking only one quote per character. _________________ From: Algernon |

But B is a great person to have that position. I give to you the Rod and Todd quote as an example. _________________ Everybody who checks into room 1408 dies. You could be next, John Cusack! |

"Fire! And lots of it!"
46. Dr. Julius Hibbert - 63 points
(7 of 29 lists. Highest ranking - #5 Sami)
Dr. Hibbert is the Simpsons' (usually) kind-hearted family doctor, a genius, a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Mensa member, and is one of the few regular African-American characters on the series. Hibbert is noticeably less dysfunctional than just about everyone else on the show, though he does have a bizarre tendency to laugh at inappropriate moments.
Along with Carl, Judge Snyder, Drederick Tatum, and Police Sergeant Lou, Dr. Hibbert represents African American people in the show, although to date, Dr. Hibbert and Carl have only had one direct exchange, with Hibbert apparently being irritated by Carl's description of him as a "brother." He has a red belt in Judo |

"Ay, Dios no me ama!"
45. Bumblebee Man - 65 points
(9 of 29 lists. Highest ranking - #10 Ragingape)
Pedro Chespirito, known as the Bumblebee Man, voiced by Hank Azaria, appears on a television show on "Canal Ocho" dressed in a bumblebee costume. He is a caricature of "El Chapulín Colorado" (The Red Grasshopper), a character created and portrayed by Mexican television comedian Chespirito, and his show consists of simple skits, often involving heavy slapstick.
Bumblebee Man never takes off his costume, even when by himself; the sole exception is the episode "22 Short Films About Springfield", in which Bumblebee Man's private life is shown. In this short segment, he is portrayed as innately clumsy rather than simply acting as such.
In the Spanish-language version of the show, the humor of Bumblebee Man (known in Spanish as el abejorro cotorro) relies on the fact that he wears a gigantic bee costume and frequently engages in physical comedy; there has been no effort made to translate his speech to another language. However, he does speak in a Mexican accent in Spanish. |

#48 dude, chill out. Wait until Ralph Wiggum is in the top five.
Also I thought Hibbert would be higher. _________________ Everybody who checks into room 1408 dies. You could be next, John Cusack! |

"This is just your memory. I can’t give you any new information."
44. Space Coyote - 66 points
(5 of 29 lists. Highest ranking - #10 (2) Whittle, Lindy)
Marge and Homer Simpson head over to a Springfield Chili Cook-Off, Homer having promised to not drink any beer. While there, Homer demonstrates an extraordinary ability to withstand hot foods, until he falls victim to Chief Wiggum's chili spiked with "The Merciless Peppers of Quetzlzacatenango". The peppers bring on a mescaline-esque hallucination wherein Homer encounters a snake, a tortoise and even destroys the sun. He meets his spirit guide, a coyote voiced by Johnny Cash. The coyote advises Homer to find his soulmate, and questions Homer's assumption that he has already found her in Marge.
Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan were the writers' two choices to play the coyote. Bob Dylan has turned the show down many times, so Johnny Cash was given the part. The coyote was intentionally drawn in a more boxy way so that it looked unlike the other Simpsons characters. It was also done that way to resemble the representations of coyotes in American Southwestern art. |
