When I was just out of high school I smashed the shit out of the fender on someone's really nice rebuilt Beetle late at night and just took off. I still consider it one of the worst things I have ever done. The funny thing is that I forgot about it for years, and when someone hit-and-ran my car when I'd had it for less than six months and ruined the entire driver's side of my car, I never once thought about how I had done the same thing on a smaller scale to someone else.

Less than two years ago, I was in a parking lot, and I found a girl that needed help jumping her car. I did that, and I felt really great about it. I was backing up to give her room to get out, and I totally just rammed into this other parked car, leaving a huge indentation in the fender. I did that high-pitched Homer Simpson scream and sped away.

I too scraped a car once, when I was a bagger at Winn Dixie at 14. I was wranglin' carts and I accidentally cut it a little too close, and banged the corner of a cart into the door of a car. I felt terrible, but as if I wasn't feeling bad enough, the front door opens and a guy comes out and frustratedly checks out the ding. I said "ohmigodiamsosorryisitbaddddd?????" and he says, "/sigh, no it'll be fine.."

I still feel terrible.

This guy rear-ended me once, but it was because it was raining and his foot slipped off the brake from it being wet. I was pretty pissed because we were stopped already and I didn't understand it. So I got out of my car and checked it out and he said didn't have any insurance and he offered me $20 to not take his info. So I thoroughly inspected my car and took the money, because I was like 18 and probably broke at the time. Then he asked me for my phone number. He was kinda cute and my age but I was too confused to give it to him (going from pissed, to "oh hey, money", to "you want my number now?") so I just laughed and said bye and left.

i went into this in great detail on the forums when it was happening, but in brief, i got in a minor car accident my senior year of high school when a garbage man stepped out in front of the car in front of me and i skidded into it because it had just started to rain and the roads were slick and i was driving a 1992 taurus station wagon at the time, so my brakes were not that great. i got charged with following too closely because you always do if you rear-end somebody and it gets reported, but the judge waived the fine because the accident was so minor, but also pretty much unavoidable given the circumstances. then over a year later, the woman who'd been in the passenger seat sued me because of alleged neck/back problems. evidently, she had had surgery since the accident, but it was for a pre-existing condition. their trunk was full of computer monitors that didn't sustain a scratch, and you couldn't even tell their car had been in an accident by looking at it, but she was claiming the accident had caused these back problems. eventually, she settled with my insurance company, for around $100,000. i haven't thought about it in a while, but it's kinda making me angry to talk about it now. i still think of myself as a humanist, but it really forced me to confront the fact that most people are selfish, opportunistic dicks.

but no, i didn't have to pay, tho it did raise my insurance rates, which is an effect i'll be enjoying in like a week, because i go off my parents' insurance once i graduate.
