How Not to Be Intimidated by The Music Forum

Oh look an obscure reference to a band only four people like is in the header of the music forum. How novel and unexpected.

How Not to Be Intimidated by The Music Forum

Postby AudeSapere » Thu Jun 16, 2025 4:07 am

I wanted to start this thread because, honestly, I feel pretty intimidated coming into this forum. It's my fault at the end of the day, but frankly I've never heard of at least 40% of the bands mentioned in here -- in passing at best -- and I've only actually heard the occasional music of maybe 40% more of those bands. I'm okay with admitting that I don't frequently, lustfully branch off into new bands or genres, as I am reasonably comfortably with the music I listen to today. But I'd like to expand my tastes beyond that, and there's always something new under the sun, right? So I'd like to propose a thread where somebody simply proposes a band he/she likes, and other people expand upon those tastes with the PBoink not-stupid version of asshole Pandora recommendations or whatever. We might learn something and find new bands we like, and at the very least we can find some cool music. I mean, I found the Decemberists by accident because a friend happened to have an extra ticket.

For example, I love the Smiths. Many people do. I've heard a lot of their derivatives and enjoy them. What's a great artist/album who/that can replicate and, more importantly, expand upon the Smiths' groundwork?

I just would like to hear specific recommendations from people I respect rather than going on Amazon and seeing PEOPLE WHO BOUGHT THIS ALSO BOUGHT:. Feel free to post your suggestions on this particular example (which I imagine, if good, will depress me, but that's all right), but also ask your own questions and find some stupid bands you like that are automatically inferior to the bands I like.

I find that music is interesting in that if you like a band then it's easy to branch off into other bands. If you like The Smiths, well, you'll probably like solo Morrissey. If you like The Smiths then you might like We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank by Modest Mouse, that Johnny Marr plays guitar on, and if you like that then you might like the other Modest Mouse albums. You like that? Ugly Casanova, Issac Brock's side-project. Oh, you like that? James Mercer done that 180 soundtrack with Issac, maybe you'll like The Shins.

Gone too far down that path? If you like The Smiths then you'll probably like English bands that do inventive sadness well: The Cure! You like The Cure? Try Siouxsie Sioux! Joy Division! You like Joy Division? Try New Order! Charsimatic, literate frontmen? Listen to Pulp! Los Campesinos! LCD Soundsystem! Girls!

Some stuff you might want to download:

"Viva Hate" Morrissey
"Disintegration" The Cure
"We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank" Modest Mouse
"Different Class" by Pulp
"Romance Is Boring" by Los Campesinos

I'm pretty sure The Stone Roses were influenced by The Smiths so you might like The Stone Roses!

Try:
Waterfall
She Bangs The Drums
Love Spreads
Or the guaranteed end of night tune in the Students' Union when I was at uni
I Am The Resurrection

If you like them then check out Primal Scream and Ian Brown's solo stuff. Dinnae bother with The Seahorses though.

Basically this. Music, like every interest, involves doing a bit of research and trial/error listening in order to really cultivate a sense of what it is you like and what you're looking for in a band/artist.

It's a never-ending rabbit hole of artist affiliations, label rosters, side projects etc. and it can be super-daunting at first, but after a while you're just overwhelmed by the amount of bands you start to follow and eventually you've reached the Other Side where you find yourself trying to keep up with the stuff you like to the point where actively having to find new music becomes the outlying exception since it's just... there, where you'd be looking already.

I was kind of hoping this thread to inspire more "I like X band, who do you think I'd like", but I underestimated the musical maturity of the forum, I guess? I don't even mean that sarcastically.

btg: I know who Morrissey and New Order and Joy Division and Siouxsie Sioux and Pulp are. Also, I'm pretty sure you weren't even alive when the Smiths released their last studio album, so it's gonna be an interesting experience when you realize how sarcastic Morrissey is being in most of his latter-day songs. Don't worry, I did the same thing.

Randy: I hope Broken Bells is better than The Shins because The Shins mostly irritate me. I don't hate them but enghgngh

Fuzzy: thanx, appreciate it

Rusty: let me send you music in the same vein that doesn't depress you, or just go listen to "the perfect crime #2" and pretend that you are a noble australian doughboy

Terry: thank you, that is what I was going for and I really like this, despite the fact that I think you were mocking me

Justin: I get what you're saying, but that's why I was asking the Opinion of this forum rather than buying/downloading endless albums that result in me saying "why is this man sampling a pine cone for an hour and then flipping me off."

I was really just joking, but my musical maturity is pretty low. The only music I listen to with any cred is the stuff Justin has thrown my way. Otherwise I'm rocking out to metalcore and punk rock I should have stopped liking a decade ago and the most obvious indie music there is (arcade fire and decemberists infinite playlist).

I've been going off this list for a short while, because as much as I claim to enjoy music, there's honestly a whole lot of important stuff (as far as having heard pop music can be important) that I haven't listened to. There's some shit on the list, but at least you can say you tried out such and such artist before discarding it.

On the other hand, if you're specifically looking for obscure music, this will probably not help you.
