Good Music In 2010: Because Classic Rock Ain't All That!

Oh look an obscure reference to a band only four people like is in the header of the music forum. How novel and unexpected.

This whole entire album is dreadful. It made me lock myself in the closet and almost puke. If I ever hear any of these songs ever again I will drive a stake through the singer's heart and dance the "Tango" on his skull.

That's my favorite song of his, it's from the old album though. He released another one in 2010 and it's indeed Good Music.

There's also an older album he released with a band called Montezumas which is more fast-paced and rock oriented than his solo stuff.

Join the Pod. Or the Swarm. Join them both.

it's one of the more listenable albums i've heard this year despite how abrasive it is, you can just let a few tracks slip by without even noticing

its wonderful

question:
how do people, in the year 2010, still enjoy the killers?

My last three girlfriends have been very different people, but the one thing connecting them is that they ALL like the Killers. I don't really understand it. Lindy said she liked them because she "likes the Cars, and the Killers are the shitty Cars."

The Killers are a shifting paradigm. At first I stuck to the usual opinion of 'Hot Fuss was great, their other albums were poor.' Recently, though, I had to make a long drive and decided to just bring along my entire Killers catalogue. Suddenly, Hot Fuss sounded really tired and Sam's Town was suddenly amazing. (Their B-sides disc was still mediocre, but hey, it's a B-sides disc.) I might now actually seek out their third record and give it a proper listen.
"Remember the time Jack and Zubaz beat "The Wrangler Boyz" Levis Haas and Dennis Nimm? That was awesome. Right at the start of Some Rad Ass Wrestling, before the trampolines showed up. Man, wrestling is stupid sometimes."

I liked Hot Fuss a lot, but then everything else seems to coast on that initial success. Now instead of making a great new song (ARE WE HUMAN OR ARE WE DANCERS what does that even mean), they just say "hey remember those guys who did mr. brightside, they are us"

Sam's Town was decent when I first heard it and has been ever since, they had 1 good song on Sawdust, and then Day & Age was just kind of pathetic. And STILL girls are writing Brandon Flowers' name with hearts in their notebooks. It's not 2004 where we all thought the Killers were a band with massive potential that we hoped they would capitalize on, now they're played and overdone and simply rest on their laurels of being the killers, instead of making good music.

In regards to The Killers, Sam's Town is a fantastic album from start to finish and songs such as "Sam's Town" "Read My Mind" and "When You Were Young" probably signified the best of their catalog. What I liked about Hot Fuss in 2004, i absolutely can't stand today. I think "Mr. Brightside" and "Somebody Told Me" were cool for 18 year old me, but they don't stand up well over time.

Day and Age took them in a direction I don't like. Patrick hit the nail on the head that their first two singles are "Human" and then "Spaceman" which took them from band who made solid music to.....well...whatever Spaceman was. I don't even know what genre you would label The Killers if you had to choose one, but Day and Age certainly blurred the line of many genres without being good in any of them.

But what do I know, I still think the best band of all time is Rush so maybe take these words with a few grains of salt.

Yeah you def. lose points for liking Rush, but Hot Fuss was a great album that suffered from a sameness of sound and the too-radio-friendly nature of literally every song. I never owned Hot Fuss until a few years later, and I knew all of the words to all of the songs. When You Were Young is a great song, and definitely trumps anything on the first record, and despite the uneven nature of the album, pretty much makes Sam's Town much better than Hot Fuss.

"Intimate" by Crystal Castles is about a guy who is HIV-positive spreading his disease.

For some reason, all the electronic beats seem to fit the subject material perfectly. It is really, really frightening when you take the time to think about it.

So if you like kind of generic sort of indie pop-rock, the new Athlete record has some real good tracks on it. It also has some real shit tracks on it, but the good sort of outweighs the bad.

Also, and I'm getting sick of saying this literally every time they make an album, The Roots' new record is awesome.
