10. Akron/Family - I've Got Some Friends

Like a white cloud floating free
That's how it is
Like a white cloud floating free
That's how it should be
Like a white cloud floating free
That's how it should be
Like a white cloud floating free

That's how it is

9. Bill Callahan - Sycamore

There's sap in the trees if you tap'em
There's blood on the seas if you map'em

8. Modest Mouse - Spitting Venom

Well, we walked real stiff
And our canes tapped the ground
You hit me with yours and said
"Pull yourself together"

7. Animal Collective - For Reverend Green

Now I think it's alright to feel inhuman

6. Iron & Wine - Flightless Bird, American Mouth

And when the cops closed the fair
I cut my long baby hair
Stole me a dog-eared map
And called for you everywhere

5. Voxtrot - Real Life Version

All the talking we could do
Oh, if only we could be
A real life version of you
A real life version of you
And a real life version of me
A real life version of me

I see you, I see you
I see you, always struggling

4. The Arcade Fire - Ocean of Noise

I'm gonna work it out
Cause time wont work it out for you
I'm gonna work it on out

3. The Nobility - This Is What I've Wanted to Tell You

When we were young, running the square
I'd sneak to the theatre, hoping that I'd see you there
Eye lash motions north to south
Grab your little heart and turn it inside out
It's true, I long for you
So don't hide your eyes
Don't look so surprised
This is what I've wanted to tell you
For the longest time

2. Devendra Banhart - Bad Girl

Mama, I ain't waitin'
But I'm still holdin' on

1. Kings of Leon - Arizona

She waves, thinking that it's sexy
She must be plum crazy
I kinda think I like her
I kinda think I do

well, this is my pool of music from 2007 that isn't orchestral film scores (which would balloon my list up about thirty more discs)

Ryan Adams--Easy Tiger
Bright Eyes--Four Winds
Bright Eyes--Cassadaga
Elliott Smith--New Moon
Cake--B-Sides and Rarities
Ingrid Michaelson--Girls and Boys
Loudon Wainwright III--Strange Weirdos
Across the Universe
Mike Errico--All In
Sondre Lerche--Dan in Real Life

i also have "the killers--sawdust" and "ryan adams--follow the lights," but I haven't listened yet.

That said...

10. Make A Plan to Love Me--Bright Eyes

I heard you're scheming new pyramids
Another big idea to get you rich
Make a plan to love me sometime soon

9. Elliott Smith--First Timer

"you won't do what the doctor ordered
you won't see someone else
come on back to me, my bright tomorrow
you say feel hollow and you know it’s cause you are
well at least so far"

8. The Sun Also Sets--Ryan Adams

When you get these feelings
Next time, next time
Oh, be sure
You're gonna tear someone apart

7. Loudon Wainwright III--Daughter

Every time she blinks she strikes somebody blind

6. Across the Universe Soundtrack--I Want To Hold Your Hand

Yeah, you've got that something,
I think you'll understand.
When I'll say that something
I want to hold your hand

5. Elliott Smith--High Times

coma kid
tell me how and come to follow you around whereever you go
said i don’t go, where i'm supposed to go
and i don’t go, really anywhere you know

4. Four Winds--Bright Eyes

A squatter's made a mural of a Mexican girl
With fifteen cans of spray paint and a chemical swirl
She's standing in the ashes at the end of the world
Four winds blowing through her hair

3. Ingrid Michaelson--Die Alone

Something tastes different, maybe it's my tongue.
Something tastes different, suddenly I'm not so young.
I'm just a stranger, even to myself.
A re-arranger of the proverbial bookshelf.

2. Elliott Smith--New Monkey

i go in my car
straight to the bar
where my sweetie pours the beer
for the millions of fans ignoring the bands
he's in my ear
wants me to live in denial
says you've gotta settle for something
though it might not be really living
anything is better than nothing

1. Loudon Wainwright III--You Can't Fail Me Now

I know that fan is moving air
I can see it in your hair
But I can't bear to breathe it in somehow

10. Modest Mouse - Invisible
09. Andrew Bird - Imitosis
08. Augie March - The Cold Acre
07. Bloc Party - Sunday
06. Kanye West - Homecoming
05. Kings of Leon - Arizona
04. Iron & Wine - Wolves (Song of the Shepherd's Dog)
03. Wilco - Impossible Germany
02. Augie March - One Crowded Hour
01. Rilo Kiley - Dreamworld

I don't have lyrical examples (Wilco's would be "deedly-deedly-deedly-deedly"), but "for one crowded hour you were the only one in the room" is genius (Augie March).

mostly you could take jon's list but replace "we've got everything" with "parting of the sensory" b/c
There's no work in walking in to fuel the talk
I would grab my shoes and then away I'd walk
Through all the stubborn beauty I start at the dawn
Until the sun had fully stopped
Never walking away from
Just a way to pull apart
Dehydrate back into minerals
A life long walk to the same exact spot

10. That's Why - Say Anything
With starry eyes, she's...
Warm-glancing, entrancing
And now I'm through with all your sick, sad ranting
And that is why
You can't rock my world

9. No Rest for the Whiny - Bomb the Music Industry!
And the irony of plastic is when it starts replacing cash
And soon enough you have no cash
And it gets replaced with debt
And all you're left with is past mistakes
And the envelopes change colors
All dimly lit pastel
They go white and then yellow and then pink
Its like a fucking party to celebrate that you are fucked

8. Ice Monster - Minus the Bear
she's gone, she's gone 'cross the border, man.
and you're never gonna see her again.
i could give a fuck, oh, what you do to me.
just leave her out of this

7. Who Do You Love - Ted Leo
And so goes the most of our freedom of speech:
we live for the city, we work for the beach
And when the weekend seems to be just out of reach
Just make the most of what you’re paid, dear

6. The Receiving End of it All - Streetlight Manifesto
No! no! You were not on the receiving end of it all
You beg and plead, but no one here can save you
Why would they try when they can't quite save themselves?

5. Sleeping Lessons - The Shins
Just put yourself in my new hooves
And see that I do what I do
Because the old guard still offend (their pudgy hearts and slimy hands)
They've got nothing left on which we depend
So enlist every ounce
Of your bright blood
And off with their heads
Jump from The hook
You're not obliged
To swallow anything you despise
That you despise

4. Flightless Bird, American Mouth - Iron & Wine
I was a quick wet boy
Diving too deep for coins
All of your straight blind eyes
Wide on my plastic toys
And when the cops closed the fair
I cut my long baby hair
Stole me a dog-eared map
And called for you everywhere

3. Under the Boards - Saves the Day
And then I'll rise above the earth in a hurricane
Spun into the wind with the whirlin' rain
Reach into the top of a blackened sky
Screamin' as I fall to the earth to die

2. Gronlandic Edit - of Montreal
I guess it would be nice to give my heart to a god
But which one, which one do I choose?
All the churches fill with losers, psycho or confused
I just want to hold the divine in mind
And forget all of the beauty's wasted

1. Even if it Kills Me - Motion City Soundtrack
For the first time in a long time
I can say that I want to try
I feel helpless for the most part, but I'm learning to open my eyes
And the sad truth of the matter is I'll never get over it,
But I'm gonna try
To get better and overcome each moment
In my own way...

I so want to get back on track
And I'll do whatever it takes
Even if it kills me...

Ah, Heretics is a great song. So is sleeping lessons (which made my own list)

i realize radiohead dominated this list, so apologies for that; I just find these to be really really good songs...

my favorite songs are typically my favorites because of the combination of the music's mood and the song's lyrics. so here they are:

10. Bro's by Panda Bear- a cool collage of sound that samples cat stevens, and if you take a look at the lyrics, not too shabby there either.
im not trying to forget you
i just like to be alone
come and give me the space i need
and you may and you may
and you may and you may and you may
find that we're alright

9. Videotape by Radiohead- really sad and beautiful... it's pretty emotional
When I'm at the pearly gates
This will be on my videotape
My videotape

When mephistopholis is just beneath
And he's reaching up to grab me

This is one for the good days
And I have it all here in red blue green
In red blue green

You are my centre when I spin away
Out of control
On videotape

This is my way of saying goodbye
Because I can't do it face to face

No matter what happens now
I won't be afraid
Because I know today has been
The most perfect day I've ever seen

8. '80's Life by The Good, The Bad & The Queen- quintessentially English, it just sounds awesome.
To get out before I'm feeling you just blow them all away
It's eighties life
But it all looks good on you

Suddenly police run out and hope is found in a sound
I don't want to live a war
That's got no end in our time

Call it living in this country
Calling it missing dawn patrol
It's eighties life
And it's all gone right on you

7. Peacebone by Animal Collective- complete chaos, and yet patterned... it's kinda ridiculous, and it grows on you... and the music video is so f'ing weird.
While half of my fingers
are dipped in the sand
You progress in letters but you're used to cooking broccoli
The other side of takeout is mildew on rice

And an obsession with the past is like a dead fly
Omly a few things are related to the 'old times'
Then we did believe in magic and we did die
It's not my words that you should follow, it's your insides
You're just an inside, adjust your insides, you're just an inside

6. Nude by Radiohead- just lush and beautiful music, and so well sung too
Don't get any big ideas
They're not gonna happen.

5. Finer Feelings by Spoon- a very nice riff, and a break in the middle, combined with a solid baseline makes a good pop/rock record. I enjoy it.
I was dreaming in the driver's seat
When the right words just came to me
And all my finer feelings came up
Always out on some witch's hunt
For the one who never lets me want
Before you know it it's all fuss

Sometimes I think that I'll find a love
One that's gonna change my heart
I'll find it in Commercial Appeal
And then this heartache'll get chased away

4. Weird Fishes/Arpeggi by Radiohead- it sounds like a waterfall, kinda like pyramid song sounds like a river flowing through the outer reaches of space and isolation
I'd be crazy not to follow
Follow where you lead
Your eyes
They turn me

Turn me on to phantoms
I follow to the edge of the earth
And fall off
Everybody leaves
If they get the chance

3. Sleeping Lessons by The Shins- i was struck by how good this song was when i first played Wincing the Night Away. I thought this was the sign that the Shins had made the record of the year. Unfortunately I was wrong, but this song is really really good.
Go without 'til the need seeps in you low animal
Collect your novel petals for the stem
And glow, glow, melt and flow
Eviscerate your fragile frame

And spill it out on the ragged floor
A thousand different versions of yourself
And if the old guard still offend
They've got nothing left on which you depend
So enlist every ounce of your bright blood and off with their heads
Jump from the hook
You're not obliged to swallow anything you despise

See those unrepenting buzzards want your life
And they've got no right, as sure as you have eyes, they've got no right

2. Pagan Angel And A Borrowed Car by Iron & Wine- Iron & Wine + Drums = one crazy-mellow track that is great to listen to while driving. It's a very well constructed song.
Love was a promise made of smoke
In a frozen copse of trees
A bone cold and older than our bodies
Slowly floating in the sea
Every morning there were planes
The shiny blades of pagan angels in our father's skies

...

While with his gun the pagan angel rose to say
"My love is one made to break every bended knee"

1. Jigsaw Falling Into Place by Radiohead- Radiohead's music in this one is so cool and confident. They know EXACTLY what they're doing, and here they do it with such a swagger. And they lyrics are just so different for radiohead- looking at a failed (?) bar hookup and nightlife... it's real instead of abstract. A great song.
Before you run away from me
Before you're lost between the notes
The beat goes round and round
The beat goes round and round
I never really got there
I just pretended that I had
What's the point of instruments
Words are a sawed off shotgun

Yeah, if this list were actually true to my opinion it would pretty much just be entirely In Rainbows.

10. Same Jeans by The View
Album: Hats Off To The Buskers

I've had the same jeans on for four days now
I'm going to a disco in the middle of town
Everybody's dressing up, I'm dressing down
(harmonica)

9. Hjomalind by Sigur Ros
Album: Hvarf-Heim

LA LA LA UNINTELLIGIBLE SCANDINAVIAN DIALECT

8. My Little Japanese Cigarette Case by Spoon
Album: Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

Bring me back
My Japanese cigarette case
Bring a mirror to my face
Let all my memories be gone

7. Back In Your Head by Tegan & Sara
Album: The Con

Remember when I was sweet and unexplainable?
Nothing like this person, un-loveable

6. Burn My Shadow by UNKLE
Album: War Stories

Fate's my destroyer
I was ambushed by the light
And you judged me once for falling
This wounded heart will rise

5. Crazy by Expatriate
Album: In The Midst Of This

We had spies in the canyons, spies all around
We had to take our love into places
Where we knew it wouldn't be found
As the electrons, they collide
They come at us from all sides

4. Heart It Races by Architecture In Helsinki
Album: Places Like This

i bought it in a can and stirred it with my fingers
do it out the window
lately you've been tan, suspicious for the winter
looks like little splinters

3. If You Keep Losing Sleep by Silverchair
Album: Young Modern

I need a breath of wind so pure
To dry up the mud over me
To be reborn not born again
Erase my regret from the start
Shot the model
Flaking temporary skin you're no burden
Such reduction
Such seductive silent wine hop scotch trigger

2. All I Need by Radiohead
Album: In Rainbows

You are all I need
You are all I need
I'm in the middle of your picture
Lying in the reeds

1. Reckoner by Radiohead
Album: In Rainbows

You are not to blame for
Bittersweet distractor
Dare not speak its name
Dedicated to all human beings

I didn't actually listen to much music this year (nor have I since for a couple years really) but here are some songs that I liked that I somehow found on my own without looking throughout the year, in no order:

Weakerthans - Civil Twilight (listen to on repeat over and over again omg)
Radiohead - Nude (only song I liked on the album, but I liked it a lot) (imagine i said that like kevin from the office)
Shins - Sleeping Lessons (again, only song I liked on an album from a band I really can't stand anymore, so this is a pretty high honor)
Wale - Everything he put out that I heard
Dan Deacon - The Crystal Cat and Wham City I guess, and Okie Dokie
Kanye - Flashing Lights (this is just the greatest song ever)
Also, Kanye - Champion
MIA - Paper Planes (fu haters this is amazing and samples my favorite clash song)
CRS - Us Placers
Pharoahe Monch - Desire (at least I think that was this year)
Kings of Leon - On Call
Frog Eyes - Bushels
Arcade Fire - Keep the Car Running, Intervention, The Well and the Lighthouse, Windowsill
Feist - 1234 (first heard on iPod commercial :guitar ) (protecting my non-indie status)
On the radio I heavily enjoyed D.A.N.C.E., Umbrella (non-ironically), Beautiful Girls (non-ironically)

that's basically every 2007 song i listened to over the past year.

Music I've found from scouring mp3 blog top 2007 songs lists (this is my favorite time of year)
Architecture in Helsinki - Heart it Races
Battles - Atlas
Bon Iver - Skinny Love (this is incredible)
UGK and Outkast - International Player's Anthem (I Choose You)
The Pack - In My Car (non-ironically, I can't stop listening to it)
Grinderman - No Pussy Blues
