greenberg

greenberg is a really great deconstruction of post-ironic behavior and the naivety of confusing aloof indignation for depth of character. to me this movie is ben stiller's punch-drunk love. also, i want to marry greta gerwig.

Don't see Kicking And Screaming by Noah Baumbach because it is terrible.

I wanted to see this but never got around to it. Now it's not playing anywhere near me.

Noah Baumbach is the living embodiment of what people think of when they say "indy films are pretentious." Not that he's a bad writer or director, he just loves what the mainstream hates about movies like that. Quirky characters, everything being a comedy/tragedy, too much symbolism, hipster soundtracks, tons of awards. If you read the back of any of his movies you get bombarded with that SMART AND IRREVERENT - NEW YORK TIMES bullshit.

Basically what you're getting in a Noah Baumbach film is a Wes Anderson film without that little goofy spark that burns in the middle of Wes Anderson. Some people think that is an improvement.

i like the self-indulgent pretentiousness that comes with indie movies like those made by wes anderson and noah baumbach

and there are only so many wes anderson films, yknow, i mean eventually you need to watch the shit that isnt quite as good as him when you run out of rushmores

Squid & The Whale was brilliant but I haven't seen anything else by Baumbach that really lives up to it. Greenberg isn't an exception to this but Stiller does way better with the part than I thought he would, it really reminded me of Punch Drunk Love too.

He's great at writing this one distinctive kind of asshole that seems to be directly influenced by his family. A lot of the time he's not so good at building scripts around these characters that actually make you want to watch them for two hours.
