I really feel I got this right the first time so let me reiterate.
The issue is that a date rape joke was made, and people have seemingly defended the data rape joke as decidedly not date rape. Suffice to say, it was. The character in the fictional comedy movie, portrayed by Anna Faris of Scary Movie and House Bunny fame, was unable to give consent to sexual activity due to her consumption of alcohol and prescription drugs. Despite this the character of Ronnie, portrayed by Seth Rogen, made love to her in what he viewed, in his delusional state of mind, as a consummation of their love. In reality, and were it to occur in real life (which it didn't, but does often hence the social satire nature of the joke) the character of Ronnie would be charged with rape much to his bewilderment.
The joke however, depicting a date rape scenario, was not so much that "lol he is committing date rape" so much as "lol he thinks they are making love together" as well as Faris' line "Why did you stop mother fucker?"(Hill, 2009). This line is funny because up to this point we believe Rogen is having sexual relations with an unconscious woman, when in reality she is awake and aware of what is taking place. Her speaking combined with the line itself provide unexpected comedic relief.
Few could argue however that this implies that date rape is condonable. That, I don't believe, was the argument in place. What was being argued more so is that the scene depicting the date rape was played for laughs in a dark comedy which depicted various scenes of social satire, including criminal accusations based on skin color, alcoholism, children working in the illegal drug market, and abuse of authority by a mall security cop. None of these things were implied as "okay" and were depicted for the purpose of making people laugh. In fact, it can be argued the humor stems from an awareness that these things are wrong and frowned upon in our society.
However, there are those that disagree with my sentiments and do not feel the date rape scene was in good taste, and they went so far as to boycott the film and speak out about it's inclusion. This is acceptable. I disagree as I think we should be able to joke about these things. We have free speech in this country and can do so. Hiding from these social issues and being incapable of joking about them makes them larger threats that seek to paralyze us from dealing with them. This is what I believe.
Suddenly everyone in this thread not on the side of "date rape in a movie is wrong" gets called ignorant and hateful and Magnus gets called a bro out of nowhere. Did I miss anything?
