student at UF tries to ask a question to john kerry. kerry actually wants to answer the question, but his mic is cut and the cops start to pull the student away. the student resists, saying that he didn't do anything (which he really didn't). he ends up getting tazered and arrested.

This video really infuriated me. Like bad. Sure the guy was being a little bit of a douchebag - but he didn't deserve 5 police officers and a tazering. I can't even express my anger towards these glorified security guards. It's just....wow...that's just really fucked up.

I'm not sure what my opinion is. I'm always inclined to side with the guy getting tazed, but he was creating a scene of sorts. Not to mention resisting police escort/arrest/whatever the fuck. If he was trying to make a statement or a scene, congrats. Shouldn't be too, too surprised he got tazed.

I'm just not sure what to argue. He was cut off by the sound guy cause he was going on too long, the cops felt it was right to escort him away, he flipped the hell out and they felt they had to tazer him to get things under control. They probably just ended up making him a hero and themselves look like idiots in the grand scheme of things, but yeah, I think it was right of them to escort him away and do what they could to get him to exit peacefully, even though they failed in spectacular fashion.

Bullshit. I'm sure the investigation into whether he was tasered unlawfully will end in favor of the cops because he was resisting and did not follow their orders, but fuck that. There was no reason for the cops to interfere in the first place. According to FoxNews he was charged with reisisting an officer and disturbing the peace, but it was the law enforcement who escalated the situation, and I hope I would have reacted the same way.

Its so disturbing that folks stay in their seats while all this is happenening and he's screaming for help.

Now that my emotions have settled, I suppose my outrage was more directed at how no one did anything. This guy is screaming for help, and yeah, "resisting arrest" - but in large part no one voiced any concern. I mean, what was he *really* being arrested for? In the second video there's a guy sitting behind him and laughing. Those five guys trying to restrain him had handcuffs on him and had him on the floor already when they tased him. At one point, he says he'd walk away if they just let him go. I don't understand why they felt he was being threatening, especially if John Kerry didn't. They escalated the situation when they tried to pull him away for asking a question, after saying John Kerry won the election. They could've just escorted him outside if he was being that bothersome because I don't see how any of that was a criminal offense.

Let me transcribe the video I saw.

Some smarmy, outspoken douche starts talking to John Kerry. After being asked to get to the point and ask a simple question, he snaps at the faculty member and rudely continues talking, to the point where he starts asking multiple questions. The sound guy finally had enough of this asshole, so he shut off the microphone, causing said asshole to go all "OHHH SORRY I THOUGHT THIS WAS A FREE COUNTRY." Two security officers attempt to escort him out of the building, not arrest him. In fact, as the officers are taking him up the stairs, the crowd is actually applauding this. The guy continues to be a whiny bitch, and it takes three more officers to hold him down. Fuck this guy. He should have been kicked in the mouth.

This is not an argument for free speech, because using someone else's microphone is a privilege, not a right. He was obviously being very difficult, so I think the only wrong call the officers made was keeping him in the building. The students who are making a fuss of this are doing it just to rebel against the man. This guy is not a martyr. He's an attention whore.

This is 100% wrong. It's a shame because I pretty much agree with everything else you said. You know the guy was being a bitch and overstaying his welcome, but he's in a public building speaking to an elected official. No matter how annoying he might have been, he had the right to be heard.

i remember during the election, someone asked him his stance on abortion in some one-on-one interview. he didnt really answer it to the point that the interviewer was so confused that he just moved onto the next question. i think i remember part of kerry's answer being "lean forward with an awkward smile."

Eh, I still don't think his right to free speech was necessarily violated here. He was hogging the microphone, and the people who brought (perhaps even paid for) Kerry to the university wanted to speed things up, with which he rudely refused to comply. It was the university's microphone, and they had every right to cut him off when he wasn't being civil. I just don't see the university cutting him off as being that big of a deal. I may be wrong in principle, but I don't like how freedom of speech makes some people think it gives them a right to be an asshole without any consequences.

I'm not sure what you'd have them do, though, other than verbally objecting to it (which some of them did). Any physical intervention would have turned into something a lot worse.

The guy did have the right to speak. He had the mike for what, 1:30 max? If he hadn't been egged on by the groaning crowd and police officers, and was just allowed to speak, he probably wouldn't have taken more than an extra minute. Tasers are serious shit, and really should only be used if the person in question is attacking someone. There were five cops, by my count. Granted, they should never have kicked him out in the first place, but they should have at least just each grabbed a limb and dragged/carried him out.

And yeah, this situation reinforces the perception people already had about John Kerry.
