Mike, I can technically quit my job whenever I want. I meant that things are not as simple as "I do not like my job therefore I should quit." What exists as a possibility and what is a good idea do not always go hand in hand. I'd like to have a job when/if I do leave.

James, that is my main point. I've been unhappy for a long time, but I haven't found anything better yet which is why I'm still there. I'm not going to leave without a job to go to and I'm not going to go somewhere worse. I may dislike my job, but I am living debt free other than my car payment. So, I'm at least one up on a lot of people.

I must admit that several complaints I have are universal to any job (why can't people just pay me to sit at home?). Many are industry or company specific. Some are with the people with whom I work (again a universal complaint). If I find a new and improved job, great. If I don't, I could do much worse than I am. I'll keep this job until something better comes along or I retire.

I think that I am pretty reasonable about the whole situation. This isn't a recent or snap decision. I didn't go in yesterday and the man was hasslin' me 'cause I was late, but I got a good excuse this time. I've thought about it and decided I should look for work occasionally. If a good opportunity comes along, I'll take it.

*Complaining on the internet doesn't really qualify as helping anything and I know this.

Without knowing the specifics of Maynard's job or general situation, "well maybe you should quit" isn't really good advice. (I was suggesting he shouldn't kill himself for a job with no future and no real reward, not that he should quit.) And "of course you can quit" is almost certainly an oversimplification of things. When someone says "I can't quit my job" they don't mean "I am physically unable to quit my job because I conscripted and/or a slave" they mean "It would be a really bad idea for me to quit my job." "Of course you can" seems like a silly thing to say.

As for James, the entire point of this thread is bitching about dumb shit.

Other than my initial statements, I think I've been as reasonable as can be expected about my job. I don't like it, but I'm dealing with it. Some things at work can be improved, but are not being improved and they will not be improved. When I have valid complaints about my work situation, I think I should be allowed to voice them.

I don't want to get into specifics, but I rarely make serious complaints about my job unless they are things I see as changeable. I'm not omniscient and sometimes the things I see as improveable are not. My immediate supervisors rarely explain why things don't change for the better. They ignore them. I'd even be happy with a, "You are not as informed on the subject as we are. We can not explain why, but rest assured you're issue has been noted."

If a complaint I have is something that is simply part of the job, I usually grumble a bit and let it go. Ocassionally, I'll harp a bit just to get it out of my system. It's my own fault for being in my position.
