Yeah, we wouldn't have Wes Anderson as Wes Anderson today if we didn't have Hal Ashby. He's definitely got some influence.

I want to say that I feel Malick is up there with the other directors on this list.

I will recognize that as your opinion as long as you recognize my opinion that Harold and Maude is complete horse shit.

Let the record show that Hanstock's Horse Shit Detector is, at best, suspect.

Don't feel bad, Hanstock. I used to own The Rock.

In my defense, I was attempting to buy the entire Criterion Collection at one point. Also, I hadn't seen it since I was 16 when I did think The Rock was pretty awesome.

It's not so much this as that we know you pretty well and have seen your DVD collection, and had you explain why you own Living Out Loud and The Night Porter and all, so we don't know when HEY I LIKE THAT KIND OF MOVIE starts and where THIS IS OBJECTIVELY HORSE SHIT begins.

Not a wrong opinion, just a system of forming an opinion that we don't understand.

Well it is my opinion that Harold and Maude is horse shit and it is my opinion that I enjoy watching The Rock. I made it clear that these are merely my opinions and don't believe I brought objectivity into it since opinions are by definition subjective.

There are certain things that I can't explain why I enjoy them or don't enjoy them, I merely do or don't and make no bones about it. I understand that tons of people ejaculate upon themselves regarding Harold and Maude. I don't. That's all. I'm not trying to change anyone's mind or tell anyone that they're wrong, just saying what I like. I own The Night Porter (and have not yet watched it) because I collect Criterion DVDs and it was like eight bucks. I own Living Out Loud because I eat chick flicks like candy and I happen to think it's a terrific movie (in the sense that I greatly enjoy it and it makes me feel good).

To each their own is what I am saying.

also folby hittin the nail on the head itt

I don't want you to think I was putting you down for not liking Harold and Maude and liking The Rock. Everyone is entitled to like what they want.

I usually come across as a dick when discussing movies and, to a lesser extent, music. Mostly it's because I feel pretty passionately about the things I like and dislike. Whenever I get into a discussion regarding movies, assume I have put, "Hey! This is my opinion and I feel pretty strongly about it! If I'm pissing you off, tell me to back off a little." at the beginning.

Also, Criterion collecting in this topic.

I can't say I have ever heard anything positive about The Night Porter, but someone must like it. I don't think the eight dollars Hanstock invested is that much of a risk considering, if he doesn't like it, he could probably eBay it for twice that much.

I hadn't seen The Rock in 10 years when I bought it, but I did like it when I originally saw it. After seeing it a second time, I realized that the movie was not as good as I thought it was in high school.

I always took pretty calculated risks when I bought a Criterion I hadn't seen. I would base my decisions mostly on my interests at the time, the thoughts on the director, general critical reaction, etc. I didn't go, "Hmmm...I wonder what this Salo movie is all about."
