Post subject: Abstract Style |
|
|
One thing I have always be very partial to was abstract style in movies. To tell the truth, I don't know how to explain it so I will give examples to see if anyone has a better way of describing it. One instance is the personal hells for Bill and Ted in Bogus Journey. The way the background was constructed in the army room always struck me as a creepy awesomeness. Another example that I vaguely remember is scenes from Mother Goose Rock ‘n’ Rhyme. I hate to use that as an example since it has been so long since I have seen it, and it is very hard to find a copy (atleast for me), but for some reason I remember it being the same creepy style. I know their has to be more out their that includes this style of background, so I thought this would be a good place to start my search. Does anyone have any ideas? _________________ SPOOOOON! |

It's been a long time since I've seen Bogus Journey, but I believe this is the scene you were refering to. Just for visual reference.
Perhaps you're looking for something along the lines of German Expressionism? Though that tends to be used to label primarily gothic, monochromatic visuals, and while I haven't seen it I have to imagine Mother Goose Rock N Rhyme doesn't fit that description.

From what I remember, there were some kind of gothic visuals in the "twisted children's fairy tale hi I belong in a Tim Burton movie" sense. _________________

I suppose a really shitty example would be the movie Batman & Robin. _________________

Also, Terry Gilliam has that strange look about his films, similar to City of Lost Children. There's a certain type of camera lens, I'm not too sure what it's called, that achieves the effect.
It's like the opposite of a fish eye lens, which does this:
But instead of bending the image toward the viewer (as the fish eye lens does in the above picture) it bends the image away.
Anyone know the name of the lens I'm thinking of? _________________ A suitable ending, I think! |

I think that's a particular type of fisheye known as circular fisheye lens, but I could be wrong. _________________ Hello! Telephone time! |

There are a myriad of films that have incorporated that look, dating back at least to The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Tim Burton has been known to use the style in several films, and as someone has mentioned before, many of Terry Gilliam's earlier films utilize it as well. _________________ And this is a promise, because this is true. Thanks for the recommendations, I will go look those up now. The Mother Goose thing probably wouldn't go under the German catagory but it's still a better way of describing it than I had. _________________ SPOOOOON! |
