This week, "the big leagues." A forgotten/redirected classic you won't find in a hell of a lot of places online. My favorite television match ever.

Week 5 - The Night the Glass Ceiling Came Down (for a little while)

Triple H and Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho, World Wrestling Federation "Raw is War", 5/21/01

I remember the impact this had on the Internet Wrestling Community at the time. People were losing their damn minds. It was a fantastic match, included one of Hunter's increasingly-rare moments of heroism and selflessness, and gave hope to workrate freaks the world over. It was Benoit and Eddie at WMXX on a smaller scale, and one of the few moments in the last five years where "the E" finally got one right. Thanks for posting this, B. Keep the hits comin'.

I'll never forget seeing this match the first time. I'm with B as this being my favorite televised match.

Jericho was my favorite wrestler at the time and this match reminded me why. I was also a huge Benoit mark, so I was pretty ecstatic to see this match.

Oh man, Austin's lame ass Disturbed theme. I miss Heyman pissing off J.R. on commentary too.

Cripple H Thomas Haden Church.

My comments will be bullet point style.

-I love Jericho's old entrance.

-Loved the bit at the start of the match where Austin fakes towards Benoit on the apron and Benoit just stares him down and starts towards him.

-Liked the spot with Benoit fighting out of the corner, taking a thumb to the eye, then locking Austin in the Crossface, all leading up to the chair shot by HHH.

-I counted two or three times where Hebner was actually in the way.

-The brawl leading to the missed three count after the Pedigree was nice.

-I think you could count the moves (not punches or kicks/stomps) by HHH/Austin on one hand. That probably played into their characters of vicious heels more though so I don?t really have a problem with it. Also, it sells the idea of them coming into the match thinking ?We are bigger so let?s just beat them,? while Benoit/Jericho have to outwrestle HHH/Austin.

-Didn?t realize this was the match where HHH ruins his knee.

-The spot with the Walls/Liontamer on the table was great.

-Love Jericho stopping the count by ripping Hebner out of the ring after the stunner. Jericho was the legal man anyway.

-HHH hitting Austin with the sledgehammer seemed stupid to me.

Really happy with who won and really suprised Steph didn't get involved at all. Overall, a very fun match with lots of action and a good pace.

Yeah it was a great match. I actually remembered hating Jericho's entrance when he first got to WWE, and really not liking him as much. I thought he was great in WCW but just alot less interesting in WWE. And I couldn't tell what it was exactly that ruined HHH's knee. Was it the Liontamer on the announcer's table?

Nope, the strenuous hitting Jericho from behind when he had Austin in the Walls.

Which is sad because that's the most extreme activity to result in a quad tear in the WWE yet. What with Vince tearing both of his just coming down to the ring and Nash tearing his following about 30 seconds of wrestling after months of injury recovery.

Hadn't seen that once since the live airing (well, except for the clip of HHH tearing his quad and Jericho putting him in the Walls on the announce table). There definitely hasn't been a tag match on Raw since then that has matched the intesity of this one. Also, I always tend to forget how competent a performer Austin was.

I always hated Austin's gimmick, but I'll admit he is pretty talented. I liked Jericho and Benoit's performance in this match a lot. I agree with Ragingapes remark about how few moves HHH and Austin had in this match. I kind of wish they did more moves and cheated less, but they were probably just trying to work over the heel role thoroughly.

I agree. It seems like main event tag matches these days have a "going through the motions" feel to them. I also liked how the rest holds in this match actually looked effective, compared to the uber-lame chinlocks used today. Austin assisting Triple H in the abdominal stretch was a nice spot. Really, nothing in this match was contrived at all.

And props to Hunter for toughing out that quad injury.

Yeah, people give the guy waaaay too much shiit, but when it comes to toughing it out or laying down for someone who needs/deserves the rub, he'll give it 100%. Batista owes his popularity and title reign to Hunter for putting him over and especially for making him look so good in that Hell in the Cell match (that's not to say Batista didn't do his part, but facing an experienced HitC guy like Hunter certainly didn't hurt matters).

This match is really good. Its my second favorite Raw tag match behind D-X and the Radicalz versus Foley, Rock and Too Cool. Austin played such a great heel. I'm so mad at everyone involved for the circumstances leading up to him walking out on the Lesnar angle, because that could've been crazy money if they'd b booked it right. And watching the match knowing what'd happened to Hunter makes him finishing that much more impressive.

Holy shit, I'm glad I'm not the only one who has that as their #1 Raw main event ever. So fast-paced, the crowd was electric, great main event.

I'm not sure about that. The wrestling was average, but nothing like the SCSA/HHH VS Y2J/Benoit match in this post. The 5 VS 5 tag was alot about the crowd being 100% for the faces and 100% against the heels. The match was fast and fun, but I don't know if it was necessarily good (compared to the other matches he's posted). And then at the end, Kane returned, and blew the roof off the place.

It's kinda like one of my favorite matches of 2005: Christian VS Orton from February, the one with the leap-frog-RKO finish. The match was decent, WWE actually capitalized on when they had the match, and the crowd raised the match-rating by one or one-and-a-half stars.

By the way, I want to participate more in these, but I just have trouble watching matches on my computer, it's weird. I saved every match so far, and I want to reply more often.

Let's get Viscera VS Big Show for the World Title up on here, from like December '99.

Or Joe vs. Kobashi.

Speaking of crowds improving a match, have you ever seen that Christopher Daniels vs. Kevin Steen match where the crowd is the reason the match is watchable? If you take the crowd away, the match is probably **1/2, *** if you're feeling generous. The crowd makes it seem as if it's a ten-star match that comes with free blow jobs. It's one of the most interesting crowd reactions to a match this side of Lesnar-Goldberg, which you could probably write a fucking Masters thesis on.
