No, I'm not shitting on his list. I'm quoting a line from an article he wrote in the "Little Dudes" section of Whatever-Dude.com like years ago because I obsessively remember dumb shit like that.
Who the hell am I to condescend on somebody's musical tastes? I like piano jazz where the girl says "fuck" a lot. _________________

not my lady peace!
I don't actually have anything against that band; for whatever reason I have a soft spot for some of the late '90s post-grunge-ish stuff. In any case, I have precious little indie cred despite being in college, and so I try to compensate by avoiding judging music as much as possible. I'll probably end up trying out some of the stuff that comes up on other people's lists. Anyhow, here are my five favorite songs of the year:
5. Banquet- Bloc Party
4. On the Mend- Foo Fighters
3. Come On! Feel the Illinoise!- Sufjan Stevens
2. The Engine Driver- The Decemberists
1. The Bleeding Hearts Show- New Pornographers
Something by Okkervil River or The Go! Team would probably be on there if I had found out about them before about a week ago.

Been working on this list since November...
Personally, I've felt its been a ridiculously good year for music. Nothing earth shattering, but very very solid.
1. Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise 9.7
(the only easy decision on this list)
2. The Books - Lost and Safe 9.5
(got dissed for being different from their other stuff, more pop-like and streamlined. Actually its just way fucking better)
3. Eels - Blinking Lights and other Revelations 9.1
(its like the sequel to his earlier bleak stuff. Life sucks and we're all gonna die....rock on)
4. Clap Your Hands - Clap your Hands Say Yeah! 9.0
(i really cant decide between this one and wolf parade, both are really great)
5. Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen 9.0
6. Low - The Great Destroyer (underated) 8.9
7. Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene 8.8
(dissapointing, but still great)
8. Mountain Goats - Sunset Tree 8.8
9. New Pornographers - Twin Cinema 8.8
10. The Earlies - These Were The Earlies 8.6
11. Animal Collective - Feels 8.5
12. Andrew Bird - The Mysterious production of eggs 8.5
13. My Morning Jacket - Z 8.2
14. Sigur Ros - Takk 8.0
15. The Decemberists - Picaresque 8.0
I dunno, I had alot of fun with music this year. Felt the pickings were alot slimmer last year.
edit: added my ratings

Albums I liked this year:
Team Sleep - Team Sleep -- It's weird and very un-Deftones, but it really grew on me, and now I love bits of it.
Gorillaz - Demon Days
Roots Manuva - Awfully Deep
Goldie Lookin' Chain - Safe as Fuck -- Teeheeeee.
Bloc Party - Silent alarm
System of a Down - Both of em -- Yes, I get it, Toxicity was a super-awesome album, and the two new albums aren't a patch on it, alright already. But guess what, I like it, sorry. Oh, and for the record, Toxicity was their weakest album of the lot.
Albums I've been mildly disappointed by this year:
Queens of the Stone Age - Lullabies -- Bit too patchy to be as good as I hoped, but it's still got its good points. Better than Rated R. That said, I've still yet to give it the proper listen it deserves.
The lack of a new Deftones album -- Want it now!
I'm also just starting to get into Mars Volta, but I haven't listened to the album as a complete entity enough to rate it really. |
I agree with you about Lullabies, I found it to be pretty dissapointing as well.
And Team Sleep are good? I hadn't heard anything by them but have a mild interest because of the Deftones. _________________ She once fell through the street. |

Favorite albums this year:
Against Me!- Searching for a Former Clarity
Mars Volta- Frances the Mute
Coheed and Cambria- blah blah blah 4
Sufjan Stevens- Illinois
Kanye West- Late Registration
...that's all I can think of.
Dissapointment:
Mars Volta- Scabdates. You could tell it was rushed, because I have bootlegs that have better production than this. Also, "Hey, lets stretch three old songs to 72 minutes and make the tracklist look like its around 11 or so!"
Worst musical trends this year:
-Bands with exclamation points in their names
-Jamie Foxx reprising his role as Ray Charles in every other hip-hop song
-Gwen Stefani and Black Eyed Peas thinking they make good music _________________

It's pretty much nothing like anything Deftones have ever done, so I don't think whether you like them will really have any bearing on what you think of the Team Sleep stuff. I like Deftones and really dig Team Sleep, but my housemate is a massive Deftones fan, and he's not so sold on it.
It's a relaxed, 'chillout' album really, far closer to Massive Attack or the weirder Radiohead stuff than anything heavy. It's very disjointed as well though, a lot of the tracks aren't really songs in their own right, but almost just random collections of sound, and it never really flows from one track to the next like it should. It's a strange one, but as said, I really like it.
I'd suggest giving it a listen before you commit to getting it. There's a few tracks up on their myspace blog (although that seems to be newer stuff) to listen to, and you can listen to bits of the first album on their official site. |

I cant stand Against Me ( ! ) and I'll tell you why, I will! Apart from just basically disliking their music and die hard "U DON LIKE AGAINST ME??:-O" fans, I always feel like I'm listening to a whining bastard ass teenager when I see their name in print. YOu know, with that inflection of some dickwad kid who was told to clean his room or no movie theater money.
MotherDearest: James, you march right to your room and clean it before you go! This is spring cleaning, we're waging war!
Jimmy: Yeah, against MEEEE!
I blame the exclamation point. I always do. _________________ WAAAOOOOOOOWWWW! |

Oh You're So Silent is the one that came out this year, correct?
I love the song Black Cab. especially the way the first words are a delicately sung "Oh, Goddamn".
Kinda reminds me a little bit of Love's Forever Changes actually. What with the pretty vocals and the 60's sounding pop production. |
