Check out this CNN Tech article.

Quote:
The technology is called galvanic vestibular stimulation -- essentially, electricity messes with the delicate nerves inside the ear that help maintain balance.

I felt a mysterious, irresistible urge to start walking to the right whenever the researcher turned the switch to the right. I was convinced -- mistakenly -- that this was the only way to maintain my balance.

The phenomenon is painless but dramatic. Your feet start to move before you know it. I could even remote-control myself by taking the switch into my own hands.

There's no proven-beyond-a-doubt explanation yet as to why people start veering when electricity hits their ear. But NTT researchers say they were able to make a person walk along a route in the shape of a giant pretzel using this technique.

The article talks about using the technique to simulate, for example, banked turns in a racing game. But seriously, why not just make a game which controls people?

A very toned-down version of that technology could be used to dramatically increase realism in racing games and flight sims. And seriously, how cool would it be to slam your friend's car into a wall and have them fall on the floor? Sign me the fuck up.

How long do we have before total immersion gaming? Like, plug in and you can see and feel everything happening in the game? 10 years at absolute max, and they'll have people lined up around the corner for it.

Fighting games. Holy lord fighting games.

In 30 years I want to explain to my grandkids how there was a time when you landed a sweet Shoryuken on your opponent and they DIDN'T shit themselves and fall over.

Flawless victory? Collapse a lung. That'll show you what it means to suck. Now get out of my game and get to the hospital, chump.

Good Lord, I want this. Each company will have to have their own 1st party "Oops I Crapped My Pants" diapers for MadCatz to make a shitty knock off of.

The Madcatz one would break after a week, but as always with Madcatz, you'd be in denial and still try to use it with minimal results.

This would be bad with the diaper rip-off.

This would be pretty cool, but I get the feeling there would be lawsuits if it was too dramatic. Still I hope I hear more about it in the future

This is true. You'll probably need to sign about ten waivers if you walk into any arcade with anything like is, and need a lawyer with you to purchase a console version.

Or, on the opposite side of this, you could circumvent the entire rush to improve graphics, and just control say, a full sports team in the world, with cameras set up on them. Unrealistic gameplay, HAH!

First person to make a GTA game with themselves as the subject gets a free killing spree and bonus death sentence!

Yeah, it would be all great until you got mad, threw the controller at the system, and your friend fucking exploded.

Seriously though, that's almost like mind control. Creepy.
