This is pretty interesting. I really like the three seconds of F-Zero that they show.

EDIT: Son of a bitch, I'm sorry.
Here.

To me, that seems like the dumbest idea for a controller yet. I mean really. Who wants to be jumping all over the room and flicking their wrist just to make a character move? I'll stick to my Playstation 2 (and one day, 3) thank you very much.

Okay, that did look pretty cool. The only thing that I'm doubtful of is the controls for 3rd person games. The Mario demo looked good, but I can see issues where jumps are misinterpreted by the controller to make him run into the distance, and vice-versa. As long as they make good on something like that Wavebird mock-up we've seen pictures of as a controller option, it should be fine. The racing and the swordfighting looked great, though, and the point/click/drag/outline stuff really opens the doors for designers. Good stuff.

Well since Nintendo didn't make that video I really have no reason to believe that a game like Mario Sunshine wouldn't utilize the analog stick plugin. Jumping should really be left to a button, or else we're all going to be over with Dollo complaining about our wrists.

I imagine a lot of the RSI-inducing sillier ideas will probably be ironed out by the testing department before it gets to the users though. Jumping does seem one of the more unlikely ideas, whereas the sword and driving bits seemed like far better uses of the controller. What it comes down to really is whether the new ideas actually work better than the traditional controls. If jumping with the use of flicking the controller turns out to be more effort and harder to use than simple buttons pressing, obviously it's not really worth bothering to implement (although it could be sued as an alternate control system if they fancy testing at least one game with it fully), as it just won't get used.

However, it's unlikely to be the obvious games that'll be use the new interface, it's more about the new ideas for control that they'll come up with to base around the Revolution. Look at the DS for example. The 'traditional' games (Mario Kart, Advance Wars) tend not to take full advantage of the console's features, whereas more specifically-designed games like Yoshi, Kirby or Nintendogs use the features much better, because they're designed around the new control system, rather than a pre-made game being hacked to fit it. Much like how you can usually spot a PC game thats been ported over from the consoles by its very limited mouse and keyboard support (the Need for Speed games come to mind).

Personally, I'm fascinated to see what they could come up with for the Rev. I mean, if moving our hands to control games was so dumb, steering wheel peripherals would never sell, and hell, no-one would be using a mouse to play games with. Likewise, if all we needed was direct digital control, there wouldn't be analogue joysticks and buttons on all the gamepads currently out there. A lot of people won't be won over by it immediately, because change can be difficult and not always work, so a lot depends on what can be made of the system by Nintendo, and hopefully a decent third-party support.

One of the most interesting things for me is how they'll handle an FPS game on that system, since the 'remote' end can obviously be used as a light-gun type device. But if you do that, then you can't use the remote to turn, which could limit movement. So I guess there's a trade-off in there somewhere, unless they think of something very clever.

I would think that the remote + the nunchuk would make controlling first person shooters a breeze.

Also martial arts games.

That whole sword interface just looks like the coolest thing, though. So much, so very much.

I'm not sure. Full FPS control requires moving (forwards and backwards), turning, looking (up and down) and strafing. Any light gun-use of the remote would mean it couldn't be used for looking or turning like you would with a PC mouse. So you've somehow got to implement all the other axes on the buttons available. Having, say, moving and turning being controlled by the nunchuck stick, you're still left with strafing and looking up and down to deal with some other way. I realise you could assign those controls to the d-pad on the remote, but I just wonder whether it would be easy to control that way, and if they'd give you enough fluid control to not feel jerky compared to how you're controlling the rest of it.

Obviously, it would be pretty easy to make an FPS game that doesn't use the remote as a light gun, because you'd then have somewhere to map said axes, but it wouldn't be half as cool that way.

I believe that the Revolution controller will be used thusly for FPSs:

Push toward the screen: walk forward
Swivel (or 'pan') left/right: turn accordingly
Tilt controller left/right: strafe accordingly
'B' Trigger: fire

Seems like it works fine to me.

Well like I said, there are plenty of ways to control it if you're not going for a light gun approach, but I'm just wondering how they would implement a feasible light gun game into the control system while keeping the controls fluid.

You can't really turn the remote to turn the screen and use it as an aiming device at the same time, or you'd have a real problem trying to shoot people behind you.

What's that add-on thingy called? I've seen it in the early videos showing the controller. It's basically a floating thumbstick for your left hand, while you have the controller in your right. Use the thumbstick for walking and strafing. Use the remote for aiming and turning. I would think it would need a range within the screen that you could stay in to face forward and fine-aim, and going outside of that range in any direction would cause the character to pivot for aiming in all other directions. Or possibly holding down a button on the remote (aside from the trigger) while moving it will make the whole screen move and pivot, and moving while NOT holding down that button will just move the reticule within the screen.

It's simple enough where someone will just figure out the one thing that will make it work perfectly, and people will go apeshit over it.

That's the nunchuck. They actually called it that (maybe "numchuk") in the video, I think in the part where they were showing SC2.

Okay, I wasn't sure. I didn't see it in the video when they mentioned it.

It all seems kind of gimmicky and stupid to me. I really like Nintendo, but I think they've gone far enough in alienating me, personally. Innovation does not necessarily mean improvement. Likewise, a lack thereof doesn't imlpy stagnation. Maybe the reason game controllers haven't changed much over the years is because they got it right the first time.

Yeah, but I thought the DS was stupid and pointless when it came out, and now I think it's the most brilliant move in gaming since the analog thumbstick.
