I just got the new Flaming Lips (At War With the Mystics).
Not really sure what to think. I guess I'm still digesting it. At times its so over the top with its cutesyness and bizarre experimentalness that it gets kind of annoying. Likes it drifting dangerously close into the territory of aimless acid jazz...only with spacepop bleeps and clicks instead out of tune saxophones or whatever.
But the lyrics really seem pretty great, and its just so hard to hate music with such a positive, fun theme to it.
I think I like it; and I think that its genuine, and not just me being forgiving because I WANT to like it so much.
I guess you'll just have to judge for yourself. |

I got that album today, too, and after listening to half of it, I don't like it.
I'll re-listen and probably like it more.
I got the Arctic Monkeys CD, though, and it's really good. Best Britrock album ever, I'd say. Better than the Libertines, better than Art Brut. _________________ I GOT IRATE AND FETCHED MY MAGIC MARKER AND WROTE "WORLDS INCORRECT GRANDMOM" ON ALL HER SUNDAY DRESSES

All I've heard of the Arctic Monkeys is the song currently getting played on the radio. I was really hesitant to listen to them, because NME gave them a 10/10 rating and, likely, called them the new beatles or something like that.
Anyways, I really really hate that one song I've heard so far...so I'm pretty loathe to actually check them out. I also hated the libertines (SO MUCH) for what its worth. Though I do like NME darlings the strokes (not the new album though...)
I also recently got the album Romantica by Luna. Its absolutely fantastic. (no posting pictures of hideous female wrestlers plz). Genuinely perfect dreamy guitar pop. Adorable and technically competent at the same time. I love it. |

I heard whatever the Arctic Monkeys' big single is on the radio the other day and they just kind of sounded like the Walkmen with a Cockney accent. Granted, I only heard the one song, but I wasn't overly impressed. _________________ WHEN THE AFRICAN LION ATTACKS |

| I bought the new Abandoned Pools album. I haven't been thorough with it, but "Goodbye Song" is without a doubt his most emotional piece yet. Very, very good stuff. |

I just got "The Best of John Denver - 14 All-time favorites from one of America's best-loved artists!"
My boyfriend and I bought each other Valentine's CDs at Best Buy while waiting 2 hours for our table at the restaurant. I'm very dissapointed that after looking through all the shelves all I could get excited about was a 5 dollar best-of-old-fogie music CD. Not that I'm unsatisfied, because it is a pleasing CD (and cheap yay). But I think I've reached the point where my musical tastes are going to wither rather than blossum and I'll never find a new artist that I can love. |

I've been having a terrible day. One of the worst I can remember having. Just one giant emotional disappointment, really.
That being said, "Yeah Yeah Yeah Song" off of At War With the Mystics managed to remove any depression from my immediate conscious. "Pompeii Am Götterdämmerung" brought me crashing back down. This is an album of juxtaposition. Joy and meloncholy mingle with acceptance and isolation. I love every track from it and can't wait to pick up the proper release. _________________
Didn't you know? Having uncontrollable shits is wicked scene.
|

Even Free Radicals? Thats the main song that I just cant shake. Its so bad that its kinda funny. Hell, maybe thats the point. Or maybe Wayne Coyne just takes LOTS OF DRUGS. |

I still do not like that Flaming Lips CD. I'm really disappointed because I absolutely love Yoshimi and Soft Bulletin. This one just isn't....captivating. _________________ I GOT IRATE AND FETCHED MY MAGIC MARKER AND WROTE "WORLDS INCORRECT GRANDMOM" ON ALL HER SUNDAY DRESSES

I say "Kind of Blue" be damned (Thelonious Monk does more for me than Miles Davis anyway). "Time Out" is the ultimate jazz record. I know it doesn't have all that crazy-ass "not following the previously established rules of music" that jazz is notorious for, but Brubeck is the Mozart of jazz to Davis's Shostakovich, and for me, it works so much better.
While we're talking about ultimates, "Born to Run" is the ultimate in American myth. "Thunder Road" is Springsteen's "Tangled Up in Blue," the personal chronicle of American life, but where Dylan walks through the reality of a day in the life, Springsteen has seen enough movies to know what life should be like. When the intro to "Born to Run" can conjure up memories of summer, baseball games in the afternoon and the promise of young love better than "Glory Days," a song which is about that very thing to the letter, you know you've got a classic on your hands, cheesy as hell or not. _________________

I respect your opinion, Randy, but there is not one shred of truth in either of those two sentences.

They have a new album coming out in, i think, april.
The Drive By Truckers are such talented songwriters/musicians that its not even fair. I have a hard time placing anyone, ever, ahead of them. I think that highly of them. |
