Post subject: The Last Album You Bought Redux |
|
|
I like to buy CDs. Before the MySpace incident, we had a pretty nice thread about the last album you've bought, and I tended to use that as a guide when going blind into a CD store, so I think it's only fair to bring it on back.
I've bought a lot of stuff since the MySpace era, but the notables include:
Joni Mitchell - "Blue"
Billy Bragg and Wilco - "Mermaid Avenue" and "Mermaid Avenue Volume 2"
Belle and Sebastian - "Dear Catastrophe Waitress" and "If You're Feeling Sinister"
MY Morning Jacket - "It Still Moves" and "Z"
Rilo Kiley - "More Adventurous"
The Postal Service - "Give Up"
The Arcade Fire - "Funeral"
Eisley - "Room Noises"
and I just got back from Best Buy with "Our Endless Numbered Days" by Iron and Wine and "Oh, Inverted World!" by Zach Braff's band The Shins.

Since May:
Weezer--"Make Believe"
Gorillaz--"Demon Days"
Oasis--"Don't Believe The Truth"
Pink Floyd--"Is There Anybody Out There? The Wall Live 1980-81"
Audioslave--"Out of Exile"
The Beatles--"The Beatles"
That last one is just one step closer to completing my Beatles on CD collection. Now all I need is Sgt. Pepper's, the original Let it Be, the Yellow Submarine, Magical Mystery Tour, A Hard Day's Night, and Help! soundtracks, and Beatles for Sale.
Damn I have a long way to go. _________________

You pretty much bought each of those three band's worst albums (Eisley's EP's, specifically the first one, were way better than the full-length). _________________ I GOT IRATE AND FETCHED MY MAGIC MARKER AND WROTE "WORLDS INCORRECT GRANDMOM" ON ALL HER SUNDAY DRESSES

| I bought the new Depeche Mode album. The chick on the radio said it was the best since Violator so I was lured in. Then I realized they've said that about every album DM makes. It's terrible. It may be too late for me but it would be nice if I could discover new bands and stop living in the past. Because the past is getting old. |

After talking about them in the 50 years from now thread, I went out and bought Run-DMC's greatest hits album. I'm pretty sure it's the best decision I've ever made in my life. _________________
Didn't you know? Having uncontrollable shits is wicked scene.
|

Last album I bought was "Leaders of the Free World" by Elbow.
Yes, I'm STILL listening to it.
And yes, it's STILL stuck in my car's CD player. _________________ A suitable ending, I think! |

Better than plunking down the 15 bucks for a lame-ass 50 Cent CD. _________________

I dunno, I don't really think that highly of Eisley, at least not as artists. For my money, they accomplish (at least on "Room Noises") exactly what I want them to, which is to give me some nice sounding songs that are in no way challenging. I guess you could say their older stuff is better, and I wouldn't be able to argue against it, but until they try to break out and actually do anything, I can't really see myself investigating further into their catalogue. "Room Noises" suits my needs just fine.
As for "More Adventurous," if their other stuff is better than this, I'm wondering how the band isn't more of a phenoenon. I've been listening to this record almost constantly for the last couple of weeks, and I am still consistently impressed with Rilo. I have a hard time believing that a band capable of "Does He Love You?" and "A Man/Me/Then Jim" can have those songs on an album that isn't their best. I'll definitely be picking up more of their stuff as I come across it, but for now, I have a very hard time believing they've stepped backward with "More Adventurous."
I don't really have any defense for The Shins. I'd heard a lot of folks were big fans of "Chutes Too Narrow," and I've heard the two tracks off "Oh, Inverted World," so I figured I'd pick it up for the $9.99 price tag. If my Best Buy had "Chutes," I would likely have bought that. I'm not wild about "Inverted" so far, though. The style just doesn't seem to work for me over the course of eleven tracks.

I absolutely LOVE Volume One. I suppose you know the story behind these, being that they're Woody Guthrie's discarded lyrics set to whatever Wilco and Bragg thought it would sound like, with Bragg on vocals most of the time. Volume One seems to be the "Best of the stuff Woody Guthrie Never Got Around To Recording," and songs like "California Stars," "Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key," "At My Window, Sad and Lonely," and "Birds and Ships" just make me melt like a little girl. Some of the songs seem really out of character for the album, like "Hoodoo Voodoo" and "Eisler on the Go," but there are a lot more hits than misses.
Volume two is another story altogether. It seems like the lyrics are better, but that there might not be a definitive melody to them. A lot of the tracks in Volume One sounds like they're the way Guthrie always thought it would sound, it's just that dead-on. Volume Two doesn't really fit, and other than a couple of steering wheel thumpers, like "Joe Dimaggio Done it Again," the only ones I could find myself singing along to are "Secret of the Sea" and "Someday Some Morning Sometime," just before I reach back into the CD binder for Volume One.
Once I invent a time machine, I'm going to go back to 1994 and tell Depeche Mode to stop. A new greatest hits record every couple of years will be just fine, but the only bands I can think of who are as far past their prime as Depeche Mode are The Rolling Stones and The Cure.
Please guys, for the kids. _________________

Rilo Kiley's earlier stuff is a ton less poppy, but if you like that sound, you might not like their first two CD's. However, if you're interested, I'd advise you to pick up The Execution of All Things.
As for Eisley, their EP's were pretty cool, but whoever told them to speed up every song (especially the once-beautiful now-terrible Telescope Eyes) is a fucking moron.
I don't much care for Oh! Inverted World, save for Know Your Onion and Caring is Creepy. _________________ I GOT IRATE AND FETCHED MY MAGIC MARKER AND WROTE "WORLDS INCORRECT GRANDMOM" ON ALL HER SUNDAY DRESSES

I downloaded this one last night and it's god damn good. I figured I would only listen to the Wilco songs but I like Billy Bragg's just as much. Thanks for reminding me about this. _________________ them's jokes, boy |

The last album I picked up a was a sampler from Yo' Mama records, forgot about the name. I bought it because there's a nice DisJam tune on it, the rest didn't disappoint either.
The last one before that was probably

I really dig the weird mixture of their sound and the amount of fun they seem to be having while producing it. Who the fuck says punk bands can't have violins and accordeons? _________________
