It came out today (also released today, Advance Wars: Dual Strike). I bought the Dachshund and Friends version.

My first dog is a golden retriever, named Baxter. This game is so fucking awesome. I've already taught him how to sit, lie down, and shake. Also, I entered him in an obedience contest and came in second (damn him for not staying down for 3 seconds Sad ).

This is the ultimate AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW game.

edited to correctly spell "Dachshund"

While I can see the point of this game in Japan, where space is rather limited, in America this game seems kind of...I don't know...

...I mean, I guess there's places that can't have pets, but still. I had "Catz" when I was little, and honestly it only kept me occupied for like four seconds. I don't know why they think the technology of the DS is best used to simulate pets.

I can talk to Baxter with the microphone. He responds to me saying his name. When I say to "sit down", he does. He's tired of learning tricks today, so I have to wait until tomorrow to teach him more. I've taken him on walks, gone to the park, played frisbee, etc.

The point is, in Nintendogs, the dogs are always puppies. They aren't crazy, they're well behaved, etc. In the real world, this isn't the case.

I don't know what "dogz" is, actually.

You know, all things considered, I think I'd rather just buy a dog. This isn't really a game. It's the Seaman of the DS: a Virtual Pet simulator made strictly to show off a few DS bells and whistles.

What constitutes a video game then? Does it need to be competitive?

It is a dog simulator for the PC that came out 5-10 years ago. You had a weird looking cartoon dog that you could play with using your mouse and other toys on-screen. The gimmick was that the dog could come out at any time and disrupt you while you were typing up documents or reading Harry Potter slash. I dunno why they thought that would be a good idea.

Anyway, the decision of me buying a DS as opposed to just a GBA hinges on this game. Please let me know if you find out anything awesome.

I'd love to try this game, I bought a ds way back when and the only game I have for it is warioware. So far its been all GBA games for my ds...

But as for the "just get a real dog" argument... its pretty simple, this is a game where most of the crappy parts are left out for you to enjoy the fun stuff... just like any simulator

So instead of running out and buying madden, just go toss a football around (see how this reasoning doesn't hold up too well?)

I had both Dogz and Catz and they were both really fun Sad You could get new toys online for free and the animals all had their own attitudes.

I, however, still maintain that fishing games are the devil.

But, in real life, most of us could own a dog if we wanted to. However, none of us could play in the NFL. So there is a minor discrepancy in comparing the two situations. However, I can see why this game would appeal to people. It simply doesn't appeal to me.

No, it

a) requires a degree of athleticism (no auto racing or poker)
b) has objective rules/does not require a judge (no figure skating, cheerleading competitions)
and
c) has at least one side playing some form of defense at any given time (no golf, no bowling)

I'm probably going to buy it since there aren't very many DS games out yet and I'm bored of Wario Ware.

Just another piece of crap that resembles the Tamagachi craze.
No, it's not a video game. It's a waste of money.

If you say so. I'm sure at least a few of the people who buy it will feel they got their money's worth.

Spending 50 bucks on a game is stupid to begin with, so to say spending 50 bucks on one particular game while lauding another is ridiculous.

I think it's more about the time that can be spent doing things in the game than about the simple fact that "both are games means both are equal value". One's money could be better spent on a game that has more things to do, more features, or a better storyline. Instead, what you're getting is a one-part story that consists of "take care of dog".

Okay, I think the purpose here was to get opinions from people about the game and how it plays, not opinions regarding the validity of the existence of this game and other babysitting games.
