i believe we did this on the old forum ... so here's another topic revival.

you don't have to number them if you don't want to.

saves the day - in reverie
the anniversary - your majesty
death cab for cutie - the photo album/we have the facts
radiohead - kid A
wilco - Yankee hotel foxtrot
dr. dog - easy beat
of montreal - the sunlandic twins
sufjan stevens - illinois
gatsby's american dream - ribbons and sugar
the flaming lips - the soft bulletin

pretty solid. i know i'm leaving some out that i love but the limit is 10!
edit: replaced sunny day real estate with gatsby.

what are your faves

Well you raise an interesting question with your wording (although I can't be sure if you meant to) of favorite vs. best. I always use movies as an example of favorite vs. best, "Singin' in the Rain" as my favorite of all time vs. "8 1/2" as best movie ever made. I like to think I can appreciate something above feeling its appeal, and as such, I think I could come up with two pretty different lists.

So I'll try!

Best:

1. Elliott Smith - from a basement on the hill
2. The Smiths - Louder than Bombs
3. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
4. Weezer - Pinkerton
5. Radiohead - Hail to the Thief
6. Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
7. The Roots - Things Fall Apart
8. The Strokes - Room on Fire
9. Wilco - Being There
10. The Crystal Method - Vegas

Favorite:

1. Elliott Smith - Either/Or
2. Wilco - Being There
3. Let's Go Bowling - Freeway Lanes
4. Wilco - A.M.
5. The Strokes - Room on Fire
6. The Postal Service - Give Up
7. Elliott Smith - from a basement on the hill
8. Belle and Sebastian - Dear Catastrophe Waitress
9. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication
10. hum - You'd Prefer an Astronaut

Oh yeah, I don't want to derail the thread before it gets going, either, I just think it's a nice discussion that could take place here!

These are the ten albums which have done more to influence my musical tastes than anything else I've ever listened to. Therefore, they're the ten I consider to be the most influental of my lifetime.

The Dismemberment Plan - Emergency & I
Weezer - Pinkerton
Beck - Odelay
They Might Be Giants - Lincoln
Saves the Day - Through Being Cool
Jimmy Eat World - Clarity
Less Than Jake - Pezcore
NOFX - Punk in Drublic
Q and not U - No Kill No Beep Beep
Catch 22 - Keasbey Mornings

Those are my favorites. I refuse to acknowledge something I don't like as the 'best' in any subjective medium so I'm not doing another list.

Top Ten Albums of My Lifetime? Hmm, well, I'm gonna make two lists just in case I interpret this incorrectly. One will be the cds that were just big in my life at one point or another and to this day make me "mark out" of nostalgia. The other list will be my top ten favorite albums in general. First, nostalgia.

Rancid: "...And out come the Wolves."
AFI: "The Art of Drowning."
The Offspring: "Americana"
Linkin Park: "Hybrid Theory"
CKY: Volume 1
Tiger Army: Power of Moonlight
Smashmouth: Fush Yu Mang
Tenacious D: S/T
Papa Roach: Infest
Eminem: The Marshall Mathers LP

What the fuck are you laughing at.

Now my lifetime favorites, as of the last couple years anyway.

Cursive: The Ugly Organ
Mars Volta: Deloused in the Comatorium
The Offspring: Smash
Hot Water Music: Caution
Motion City Soundtrack: Commit this to Memory
The Ataris: Blue Skies, Broken Hearts... Next 12 Exits
Rise Against: Revolutions Per Minute
The Matches: E Von Dawhl Killed The Locals
Alkaline Trio: Good Mourning
Bouncing Souls: Anchors Aweigh

Oh, why not. In no particular order:

1. Barenaked Ladies - Gordon
2. Weezer - the Blue album
3. John Mayer - Heavier Things
4. Beck - Odelay
5. Jets to Brazil - Orange Rhyming Dictionary
6. Barenaked Ladies - Rock Spectacle
7. Henry Rollins - Think Tank (I figure spoken word counts, right?)
8. Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
9. They Might Be Giants - Flood
10. Van Halen - OU812

If spoken word does not count, I will gladly substitute any other Barenaked Ladies album, especially "Everything to Everyone."

Really?

(I'm not being a dick here, I just really didn't care for Hail to the Thief and have never met anyone who did, or at least enough to list it as one of their favorites ahead of The Bends, OK Computer, Kid A, and Amnesiac...I mean, I guess I like it better than Pablo Honey...)
