Okay. The update is ready for everybody to read. Pholby wrote a nice introspective piece, Nick explains why any IMs sent my way past 11 this Friday night are going to be met with incoherent gibberish and I haven't had a chance to read Lindy's post yet, but I'm pretty sure its about girly crap like "that time of the month!" My favorite lines from Lindy's post:

A truer thing may've never been written on the website. Also,

I guess it’s more tiring to play that than I thought. No wonder there more tuba and percussion players in my high school marching band than clarinet players. |

Oh, I really enjoy when pholby writes an article. Good article by Nick too.
No offense to Lindy but I couldn't really get into an article about C.U.T.I.E. |

| Pholby's was quite intriguing. I have never seen such random and strange drawings produced by a young teen. The tap dancing desk-legged man is a good example. I love the introspection too. That's too bad that you don't have any major memories from that time period :/ |

Good job all around. Nick's was good because it gave me ideas for stuff to do on St. Patricks Day other then wearing an orange shirt and hanging a union jack in my window just to piss people off. _________________ Chuck Norris frequently signs up for beginner karate classes, just so he can "accidentally" beat the shit out of little kids. |

Loved this update.
Nick, exceptionally funny as usual. Also, its nice to see they celebrate St. Paddy's Day in Boston almost exactly the same way we celebrate it in California.
Pholby, God I loved that. I can't really explain it, though. Kind of funny, kind of creepy, very mysterious without coming to any kind of conclusion or sappy message. Just great.
And Lindy, I remember C.U.T.I.E.S. My parents would only buy us cheap little rubber plastic toys like that, so my sister would play with those while I played with the male equivilant, little rubber robotic dinosaur molds that had guns and stuff. It was awesome.
But screw you, Daria was funny. _________________

I'm sorry to say this week didn't mesh with me. Please don't take the following comments personally, some of my best friends are bad updates.
Pholby: This was very well written, for the little writing there actually is, but it seems that P-Boi is forcing itself into a "scan things you made while still school age and post them on the internet" site. There seems to be one of these every other week nowadays, and it seems to me as just a quick way out of writing too much stuff. Like I said, the stuff you did write was great, but it's way too following-the-increasing-trend-y.
Lindy: First, and sometimes this can't be helped, the picture quality was horrible in the article. I don't know what you did exactly, but it seems that you only have one little desk lamp on and forget to use the flash half the time. Some camera are horrible at close ups, but they could have come out better with a better lighting situation.
As for the article, it felt lacking. Many of the jokes were pretty obvious, such as the lesbian ones. there is a big group of girls oh lesbians (Before anyone says anything, yes, I'm aware I'm no better). It seemed to me you were trying to emulate X-E's Matt's kinda of article, which seems odd for the site that brought us Things That Are Old Or Happened In The Past.com.
Nick: The one thing I'm glad you did was not go for the easy "making fun of green things and Shamrock Shakes." That said, outside of the funny opening, most of the article is "Nick's Patented Stating The Obvious About Things In A List Form Humor," which works so well when given in light doses. But, you, Nick, have been updating a lot more often lately, and it's starting to get old for me. Obviously, it wouldn't be fair for me to tell you to update less often. I think you need to do more different things, stretch yourself out a little and see where it takes you.
And that's all I have to say. _________________

I can't speak to the effect of Lindy's article, because its one of those things where I don't remember the subject, so it wasn't targeted toward me.
Pholby's post wasn't just "hey i drew these when i was younger Thomas Haden Church." They were used to illustrate his narrative and not the other way around. By my count we've got six - maybe seven - posts loosely based around old artwork out of an archive of over 300 new posts since we started our site. I don't think that's too bad of a ratio.
And Nick. I love Nick's posts. He's my favorite writer on our site and I'm never shy about saying so. I love his matter of fact style and how he can make fun of something without coming off as a bitter or jaded ranter on the Internet. I can see where some people would tire of the format, but I think its great.
Besides, he's done plenty of non-traditional stuff including fan fiction, Adaptation & the Indians fanpage.
You were honest with your criticism though, and I can respect that. All I can really say, I guess, is that maybe next week you'll find something to love again. Which is why our site is so awesome. _________________
Didn't you know? Having uncontrollable shits is wicked scene.
|

I wouldn't care if they weren't so frequent. If I see Lindy or Kyle do one in the next three weeks or something, I'll be pretty much convinced it's a gimmick. And this doesn't compare to Rating the Lesbains because that was a continuing series by the same authors every time.

The last time he did anything non-traditional (Dugouts excluded) was in November, with Being the Backstop. Two months before that was his second latest with the Las Vegas fiction, two months before that the Indians fan page, and then didn't do any other non-traditonal Nicks for six months. He's had five updates in the past two and a half months, which is a Nick speed record, that have all been traditional Nick, and it's starting to lay thick (hey. rhyme). _________________

Hey, no big man. I thought that wagnike..wagmike?'s comment to be more offensive than yours was. The only way I'm going to improve any is if I know what's wrong.
The only thing I can say something about is this:
| Greg wrote: |

I tried to have the air of an X-E article mostly because Matt had written a short thing about those a few years back in one of those hey this guy did this first sort of ways. I just need to work on being a stronger writer to get that point across better as well as integrating it in with my own stuff.
And what I meant to say with all of this is:

This weeks update seemed very brief. Maybe it was just because of the topics or style of articles but I breezed through all the articles this week in about a half hour.
pholby, your article was...interesting. I don't know what else to say about it. I enjoyed the tone and your ability to extract a good amount of humor from fish, but it was also a little off-putting at times. The lack of context, while I understand that it was a theme of the article, made it a little awkward. I will say that I like that the authors of this site are not afraid to explore themselves and present their works for others to accept or criticize as they will. It shows courage and poise.
Lindy, a very concise article. I got a chuckle out of a lot of the jokes but (to echo Greg for a moment) a lot of them seemed a little too on the nose. I was also waiting for big laughs but it was mostly just me agreeing with what you were saying (without an first-hand knowledge of the actual subject matter) or chuckling. I enjoy your writing quite a bit so just keep plugging away. Also, the final line of the article did make me laugh hard enough that my lab mate came over to check out what I was looking at.
Nick, your article was funny but could have been much longer. I realize now as I write this that your writing style doesn't usually result in you carrying on for eons so I should just accept this. I am not Irish or Catholic and feel no great compulsion to be celebratory on St. Pat's so your article actually made some sense to me. The intro was funny, and I'd also like to add

I guess all together it was a bit of an off week, but if anything you should take that as me complimenting you on being such terrific writiers that I know how great your articles can be. |

Yeah, I actually thought most of that stuff that Greg said.
Except for Pholby's. I loved that, seriously. The only reason I wasn't eye rolling because of another "look at my old stuff" article is because the images and captions were so absurd and creative. But the funny thing was, at the beginning, I found myself wanting to just look at the pictures, and then by the middle I wanted to scroll over the pictures and just read the text underneath. You got me really hooked onto what you did remember. Also, the page titles were a nice bonus. _________________ Friction. |

I absolutly love Pholby's article. Loved it. I can always relate so well to these types of articles. Despite the brevity, it got the message and aura across and I thought it was terrific.
I can relate to Lindy's as well. Not so much the C.U.T.I.E. thing as the old toys and looking through them to remember stuff. I used to always do that as early as the 6th grade because I am one of the most hopelessly nostalgic people on earth. The line about Daria was the absolute highlight though just because I know a girl like that, and I tried to fit the whole thing in my MSN screen name but just couldn't. Oh well.
As for Nick, I always do enjoy his articles for the same reasons Justin listed, but I always am left with a feeling of "...oh shit, it's done now." I can't tell if it's because I want to read more of Nick or because it's too short but either way I'm always left wanting more from a Nick article.
It might not even be so much as a question of length as how I always feel the endings are abrupt, but otherwise I am always a big fan of Nick's writing.
That is all! _________________
