The first time I heard of the Florida Brothers was at a live show. I overheard two men talking about Dragon Gate.
Guy 1: Oh, and then there's the Florida Brothers.
Guy 2: Who're they?
Guy 1: Well, their gimmick is that since they were trained in America, they wrestle like Americans.
Guy 2: Wrestle like Americans how?
Guy 1: You know, ref bumps, steel chairs, cheating. Like Americans.
Michael Iwasa (left) and Daniel Mishima (center) both appeared in Dragon Gate under their real names with fairly normal (for DG) gimmicks, but they achieved little to no success. So off to Florida they went for WARRIOR TRAINING. (Not with Ultimate Warrior, mind you, although I'm sure that would have been pretty great too.) And so they returned in November of 2003, reborn as The Florida Brothers. Their careers took off shortly after, thanks in no small part to their constant shenanigans. Much of their cheating is in the same style Eddie Guerrero's was, which is to say their opponents get caught cheating a lot more than they do. The match here features KENSKEE, an occasional member of the Florida Brothers. The woman you see is of course Akira Hokuto, who you may remember from a previous mixtape. She's KENSKEE's wife. As you can see, she's not too pleased with her husband joining up with these jokers, but he's an American, and as we all know Americans stand and fight together. So watch the match and find out just how much KENSKEE brings to the table, or if three Do Fixer members are better than three Florida Brothers.
Do Fixer (Genki Horiguchi, Dragon Kid & Magnum TOKYO w/ Akira Hokuto) vs. The Florida Brothers (Michael Iwasa, Daniel Mishima & KENSKEE)

Fuck. Yes.
Oh man, that was so hilarious and awesome, and with the added bonus of having Magnum TOKYO land the best-looking missile dropkick I've ever seen. KENSKEE rules.
More of this, please. Or Ebetaro. _________________ And this is a promise, because this is true. This is real. This is Straight Edge.

I had a chance to watch this match a couple weeks ago (because folby is "da bomb"), and it's the most I've ever laughed during a wrestling match. I became and instant fan of everyone involved, and now I feel as if I need to buy a bunch of Dragon Gate DVDs to see what I've been missing. _________________

Since I finally got around to seeing this second match, I'll post my thoughts here to make it fair and even.
I'm now a Florida Brothers fan. They're just so goofy and OTT that you can't help but laugh at all the silly stuff they do. All the excessive armdrags and hiptossing is hilarious in "funny 'cos it's true" way, and it's a brilliant spoof of the WWE style of wrestling.
Bits I liked especially in the match: KENSKEE playing the "not quite clued up on the way the team works, but going along with it anyway" dumb muscle-type role. Also, when Iwasa (I think) got the chair (through a MASTERFUL piece of ref distraction) and pulled the Eddie Guerrero-style throwing the chair to his opponent, Magnum TOKYO (out of interest, why was TOKYO written in English at the start when it's a Japanese word?), who simply dropped the chair and kicked it out of the ring in one simple "Why would I want this chair? I don't want to get caught with it" motion. The initial in-ring "WHOA WHOA WHOA, STOP ZA MUSIC" promo was ace too, as was the finish.
Excellent, sheer brilliance. More people should be watching this RIGHT NOW. |

Yeah, I've got a lot of friends who are in/interested in going to wrestling school, and rest assured I'm making every single one of them integrate an exaggerated point and yell of HEEEEEYYYYYYYY into their movesets. _________________

A quick explanation as to why Magnum TOKYO's name is written in English:
In puro resu, many times when a wrestler turns heel they will start writing their name in English, just to be a dick and gain more heat, and this is always in all caps, a la KENTA, TAKA, CIMA, et al. _________________ And this is a promise, because this is true. This is real. This is Straight Edge.

That's awesome. I just thought people were being huge fans of TAKA Michinoku the whole time. _________________ Asked yesterday whether it would eventually release a revised edition of "Opal Mehta," a little brown spokesman declined to comment. |

KENTA isn't really like that. He took the all caps single name because his real name is Kenta Kobayashi. Since he's a student of and underling/rival to Kenta motherfucking Kobashi, he knew he'd never get by in any kind of Breakfast Serious way with his full name. It'd be like somebody trying to get over in the WWE with the name "Kurt Angelo" or something. _________________

MY favorite spot was when he tried to roll out of the arm wringer, but rolled the wrong way. But then he did it the right way, and then went back into the wrong way.
That and the referee arm drags.
I haven't laughed at a match like that in a long time. _________________ Asked yesterday whether it would eventually release a revised edition of "Opal Mehta," a little brown spokesman declined to comment. |

Finally got a chance to watch this and it is funnier than I could've imagined.
Japanese wrestlers have the greatest entrances ever conceived.

That's a two-on-two tag match, also between Do Fixer and The Brothers. This time, instead of KENSKEE, you get Baker Yagi. The man standing to the far right in the picture at the top is Baker Yagi. He was a wrestler, then became a referee when the stable he was part of collapsed. The Brothers regularly made a fool of him, so he donned a mask and joined the crew as Johnson Florida. Now he's back to being a ref, but as you'll see in this match, he knows where his alliances lie. The match seems mainly to be built around screaming. They scream at each other, the referee, themselves, there's a lot of screaming going on. Will the usual Florida Brothers antics be enough to prevail, or will they need the help of Baker Yagi? Tune in to find out: _________________ "You're a pussy, Strong!"

Those matches were awesome to watch but the guy in the first match (KENTA?) had an entrance that rivals the undertakers in length, which I was ok with it until I realised that the people dancing in the ring were all dudes. The whole running around with a pink see through unbrella wierded me out a bit also.
Why is KENSKEE's wife holding a sword? _________________ We didnt start the Fire!! |

Woah woah woah woah woah. Only some of the people dancing with Magnum TOKYO are dudes. The actual dancers are 4 women. There was one dude in there though. Those dancers are like, my current #2 wrestling related crush.
As for why Akira Hokuto is holding a sword, I'll let B handle that one. _________________ "You're a pussy, Strong!"

Ok then.. so whats she doing hanging with the other crew?
(sorry about that pholby, I saw pink umbrellas and a dude dancing and probably assumed too much)
Do the Florida Brothers always wrestle like this? Or is there a Breakfast Serious element to them? _________________ We didnt start the Fire!! |

Hoku is with the other crew because her husband is (fairly obviously) acting like a doofus. She leaves with him after the match, so they aren't at odds or anything.
To answer your question about the Florida Brothers, yes, they always wrestle this way, and no, there is no Breakfast Serious edge to them, never allowing for that classic WWE style John Cena "YO EVERYBODY THIS GUY OVER HERE EATS THA POOOOOP!!! (pauses) (Breakfast Serious voice) You can't beat me for my title!!!!!" _________________
