the problem i have with the diversity/educational concept of affirmative action (as opposed to the corrective concept - that it exists to remedy the effects of past discrimination) is that when it is based on representation, it runs the danger of functionion like a quota against minorities who are "overrepresented" in the college. people of asian descent make up less than 20% of the population, so a diversity model of affirmative action would discourage a school with a 30% population, not encourage it. unfortunately the diversity purpose is now the only constitutional one for a public institution in the US.
another problem is that it is unclear whether the diversity model helps minorities; like you have testified, it benefits everybody, and perhaps it benefits people of the majority most because they are more able to live in a homogenized society than a member of the minority (just by definition). |

It benefits the minorities in the sense that they have access to education and opportunities that they wouldn't have had before.
It’s just that too many people see Affirmative Action as "darkie taking my spot" and fail to embrace it for all the positive effects it can have.
Edit: Although in my personal case, Affirmative Action wasn't involved. Those Asians are ridiculously smart. University of the Pacific has one of the best pharmaceutical schools in the country.

And the MCRI is almost identical to California's Prop 209, which passed in 1996. It was also backed by the same guy, Ward Connerly. |
