Jon: Boy, did we ever get letters about this one.  I mean, it was ostensibly innocuous, as I guess all our strips are.  But here's a kid in college calling home from a pay phone.  All at once, our--our entire legion of readers seem to bring up the fact that college kids normally have cell phones.  They asked whether the Hangin' Out Gang was time-specific.  The answer I give is, yes and no.  I mean, I suppose that it exists in the year 1990-ish, but even that's far too specific.  Maybe in a time that's recent enough to be completely relevant but distant enough to be completely passe.
