Peter Potamus & His Magic Flying
Balloon
The Peter Potamus Show
Animal
Hippo on Safari
Outfit: safari hat / dress shirt / torn belt
Tagline: The
"Hippo Hurricane Holler." Which is either his
secret power or where characters live in a really
half-assed John Irving novel.
Plot summary:
Peter Potamus and his faithful monkey So-So travel back
and forth in time in a hot air balloon to participate in
important events as they learn about history. So it's a
lot like Forrest Gump, really, only Lieutenant Dan is
dragged out of the jungles of Vietnam by a purple
hippopotamus and Jenny gets feces thrown at her when
she's singing Joan Baez instead of shaking her ass. (more)

Comments: I
know you need some air conditioning when you're traveling
over, say, ancient Egypt in a hot air balloon. But
judging from his hat and shirt, Peter is dressed for
safari, and that get-up isn't going to do you any good
without pants. I'm not about to go wandering through the
murky brush of a rain forest and have four hundred
undiscovered species of death-snake biting into my
crotch.
Also, is it disheartening to think that Hanna-Barbera
felt the need to insert a hippopotamus into historical
events to make them more interesting for kids? Is a child
with no interest in the Hawley-Smoot Tariff going to
suddenly be enthralled because a hot-air balloon with a
screaming animal in it floats by? Give us some credit,
guys. At least give us an international jewel thief
trying to give us the slip chronologically. This is all
sub-Peabody and Sherman activity anyway.
