Jon: The art of contrasting was and is very oft-used in our strips. Of
course I mean this both literally and figuratively. We wanted to create
highlights by dramatically altering the shading levels of certain photos, and
leaving others relatively untouched. But in the more abstract sense, we wanted
this to serve as a subtle means of contrasting different sorts of people. The
young man in the inset photo is captured rather softly and gently; the third
panel is perhaps the sharpest contrast we had used to date. It was an effort to
help create a gap between the comfort of the dorm, or home if you will, and the
unknown, the arduous task of venturing out to interact with unfamiliar peers. I
think we succeeded. At least I hope-- do you think we succeeded in that?
Justin: As an aside,
the sweatshirt from the second panel - we took that from a drunk hobo stumbling
about the lot.
Jon: It was quite an unfortunate thing to have to dirty our hands with,
actually. But we were able to rest rather easily; we paid him a respectable
forty dollars, which he assured us was going to be used to pay for his infant
son's Enfamil.
