Six seconds

"Well, I guess I'd better get going.  Work tomorrow."  Kate gathered her purse and jacket as slowly as she could.  They'd broken up months ago.  "All right, gimme a hug then."

They hugged.  Kate waited for something, a kiss, an extra squeeze.

"All right, see ya.  Drive home safe."

Kate's apartment was five minutes down the street.  That night, she would pass her turn, drive another ten miles, pull her car into a parking lot of a bank that had been closed for hours, and sit.  Two hours later, she would start the car and drive home.
