That year, Mike Sweeney hit .400. On the final day of the season, a capacity crowd of 40,793 filled Kauffman Stadium. Sweeney roped a double to left field off Tigers pitcher Dave Mlicki in the first inning to guarantee it. When he did, the crowd stood, and cheered, and did not sit again for twenty-eight minutes.
"Well, the way we figured it, the rest of the world don't care about him," said a fan. "We want to make sure he knows we love him."
