| Kauffman Stadium is a jewel in baseball's crown. With its column of fountains past the outfield wall and crowned scoreboard overlooking a grassy knoll, it is rightly considered to be one of the most classically beautiful ballparks in America. Most baseball stadiums carry traits from the 1970s (when they were built to look like spaceships), or the 1990s (when they were built to look like a random assortment of brick buildings, which in turn were built to look old). A third category is reserved for Wrigley Field, Fenway Park, Yankees Stadium, and Kauffman Stadium - a dwindling group of ballparks with secure identities and unique appeal. |
| It is the place in which
George Brett collected the majority of his 3,154 hits, Bo Jackson unnecessarily ran
up the outfield wall after chasing down a warning-track fly ball, and Bret Saberhagen pitched a complete-game shutout to give Kansas City its first and
only Series championship. The world was watching then. It is also the place in which Mike Sweeney hit his record-setting 83rd home run of the 2003 season. And not a soul outside Kansas City seems to recognize it, or to want to.
