Ed Grimley (1988) Cartoon
The Completely Mental
Misadventures of Ed Grimley
Animal
Terrible human being
Outfit: orange-squared shirt
/ black pants / shark swimming in scalp
Tagline: "(something
banal) I must say!"
Plot summary: Created in the bowels of darkest hell (SCTV), Edward Mayhoff
"Ed" Grimley slowly and surely became comedienne Martin Short's most famous
character. You may remember Martin Short from such films as, "Pure Luck," and,
"We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story." If you have ever seen the movie,
"Clifford," you may remember Martin Short from such debilitating nightmares as
YOUR OWN.
"The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley" can be described best by
Wikipedia: "In each episode, Ed would have an adventure of some sort." Yep. An
adventure of some sort really encapsulates the show. Ed is a nerd who loves popular
culture, especially "Wheel of Fortune," which dates the show hardcore and
reminds me to stop worrying about this shit once I hit about thirty-five. His greatest
comedy bit (and this is seriously his GREATEST COMEDY BIT) is playing the triangle. He
plays a recorded musical piece, hits the triangle once, and then dances around slapping
his forehead. I want him to die, and I cannot make that more concise. (more)
User Comments: For years, Hanna-Barbera's
biggest discrediting was the company's cheap animation. People looked past the basic
sameness of the shows and let themselves enjoy Scooby-Doo, or Yogi Bear, or, if they're
like me, stuff like the Hair Bears and the Superfriends, and it was great. I wouldn't be
doing this niche website subsection 20 years later if that wasn't the case. About 1988
somebody said "hey, let's make the show just as bad as it looks." A red light
went off on the front of Martin Short's face and he said something asinine like
"COMIIIIIIIIIIIIING~!" and pranced around, because oh my God he does stuff like
that and argh.
Perhaps I have a strong bias against the subject matter, but I rank "The Completely
Mental blah blah Faggotronics of Ed Grimley" alongside "Hammerman" and the
goddamn Baby Looney Tunes as one of the worst animated endeavors aimed at children ever
attempted or completed. If they had made, I don't know, "Denver the Last
Dinosaur" about sodomy and the band "Lit" it would've been better than this
show.
Unable to maintain the high-demand of Ed Grimley going I MUST SAY several times, the show
was divided up into segments featuring "The Amazing Gustaf Brothers," Jonathan
Winters and, argh, Martin Short, and "scary stories" presented by Grimley's
favorite television personality, the dad from Freaks and Geeks dressed up like a vampire.
Was this funny to our parents? Jesus Christ. I wrote off somebody writing "BOOBIES;
VIETNAM" on Goldie Hawn's leg as a generational age gap I could not comprehend, but I
will be a monkey's fucking uncle if anyone anywhere EVER has laughed at Count Floyd.
Martin Short lives on to TURN HOLLYWOOD ON ITS EAR with character "Jiminy Glick"
because I have not broken enough bonds of sanity to begin actually firing guns at people.
