Hi, I'm Alfre Woodard. You may be familiar with my work as a public speaker, my devotion to Christian Science, or my supporting role in the film, "Crooklyn." Putting aside my numerous enviable achievments, I come to you via this warm emcompassing net space to share with you a story.

Last week, my daughter introduced me to the internet. Previously I had avoided the computer, as I read in a pamphlet that it may damage your eyes, and as a Christian Scientist there's just no way to fix that. My eyes are an important part of my work, as HBO is always casting a new mini-series. After convincing me that the computer is perfectly safe as long as you wear Bobby Bonilla sport sunglasses, I opened myself to the myriad possibilities of the world wide web. Our universe has become so small, the boundaries between one man's world and the next continue to blur. Now, with the power of the internet, the whole of the world is literally right at your fingertips. With such amazing possibilities of sharing and receiving now available to me, I immediately thought of one thing:

My blackness.

With the help of my daughter and webmonkey.com, I've decided to bring to you my meditation on life as an African American. Originally I conceived this as a project for Black History Month, but then I had to run to the store, and then the playoffs started and you know I just got really busy okay? Instead, I bring my art (I've unofficially cointed the term "web sculpture") to you in the summer, so that it may cool you on a hot day.

I hope that you laugh. I hope that you are entertained. But most importantly I hope that you feel you are made a better person because of me, Alfre Woodard.

Enjoy.
