Of course, Mr. Petrov was right. No missiles were in fact being launched from U.S. soil. There was an error in the satellite system that was later attributed to interference caused by sun shining off the tops of clouds. At first, he was praised for his actions, but later on he was extensively questioned, and eventually reprimanded. The situation painted the Soviet military in a bad light. He was, in effect, demoted to another post, and eventually resigned to live off a relatively meager pension.
